Exclusive: Facebook suspends app pre-installs on Huawei phones - Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc is no longer allowing pre-installation of its apps on Huawei phones, the latest blow for the Chinese tech giant as it struggles to keep its business afloat in the face of a U.S. ban on its purchase of American parts and software.

FILE PHOTO: Huawei P30 handset is displayed in a phone shop at a shopping centre in Bangkok, Thailand May 22, 2019. REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun/File Photo

Customers who already have Huawei phones will still be able to use its apps and receive updates, Facebook told Reuters. But new Huawei phones will no longer be able to have Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram apps pre-installed.

Smartphone vendors often enter business deals to pre-install popular apps such as Facebook. Apps including Twitter and Booking.com also come pre-installed on Huawei phones in many markets. Twitter Inc declined to comment and Booking Holdings did not respond to a request.

The move by Facebook dampens the sales outlook for Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, whose smartphone business became its biggest revenue generator last year, powered by strong growth in Europe and Asia.

Huawei declined to comment.

Alphabet Inc’s Google said earlier that it would no longer provide Android software for Huawei phones after a 90-day reprieve granted by the U.S. government expires in August. But Google’s Playstore and all Google apps will still be available for current models of Huawei phones including those which have not yet shipped or even been built.

The Facebook ban, by contrast, applies to any Huawei phone that has not yet left the factory, according to a person familiar with the matter. Facebook declined to comment on when the suspension took place.

In May, Washington banned U.S. companies from supplying technology to Huawei, part of a long-running campaign against the company. The United States alleges that Huawei is too close to the Chinese government and that its telecom network gear and other products could be a conduit for espionage, which Huawei denies.

Buyers of current Huawei phone models that do not have Facebook pre-installed would still be able to download it from the Google Playstore. Future versions of Huawei phones, however, will not have access to the Google Playstore and its apps unless the U.S. government changes course.

Huawei has said it was prepared for the U.S. action and vowed to work around any disruptions. But some customers at stores in Europe and Asia have told Reuters that they are reluctant to buy Huawei phones in the face of uncertainties, and analysts expect a dramatic drop in Huawei smartphone sales.

HTC Vive Pro Eye is now out in North America for $1,599 - Engadget

Engadget

At CES earlier this year, HTC showed off an updated Vive Pro headset with eye-tracking capabilities that can follow a user's eyeballs in real time. Now, the company has finally made the device available in North America after rolling it out in other parts of the globe. HTC Vive Pro Eye uses Tobii technology to follow users' gaze and ensure the part of the experience they're looking at is as sharp as possible, while the rest becomes background. The technology allows the enterprise headset to deliver realistic images and more immersive experiences.

HTC said it decided build a device with eye tracking after getting requests from enterprise customers that use VR to train employees and test new ideas and products. The Vive Pro Eye was designed to meet their needs. We used the headset to customize a BMW M5 at CES, and according to Engadget editor Jessica Conditt, the details looked "incredibly crisp" even when she "leaned in closely to examine specific parts." A full Vive Pro Eye kit will set buyers back at least $1,599 in the US and $2,149 in Canada. It includes the headset itself, two controllers, two base stations and other accessories.

Google Stadia Price, Launch Window, Launch Games Lineup Revealed - IGN

Google Stadia Pro subscription details and more revealed.

Google has unveiled more details about its Stadia streaming platform. And while we don't have a firm Google Stadia release date just yet, we know a lot more than we did after the Google Stadia reveal event, including how much it will cost at launch, what month it's set to debut in, and what games players can expect from the streaming service.

As revealed during the Google Stadia Connect, Stadia will launch in November 2019, exclusively via the Stadia Founder's Edition bundle, available for preorder on the Google Store. Read on for everything you'll need to know about Stadia Pro, the Stadia controller, what games you'll be able to buy and play, and more.

Google Stadia Price, Launch Window

Stadia will be available in November, and the only way at launch to access the cloud-based service will be via the Founder's Edition. Google will reveal more details in the future about how players can access Stadia in 2020 beyond the Founder's Edition.

Stadia will be available in 14 countries via the Founder's Edition: the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. More regions will be added in 2020, according to Google.

Where to Play Google Stadia

Google Stadia will be available at launch on the following platforms:

  • Desktop (via Chrome browser)
  • TVs (with a Chromecast plugged in)
  • Tablets
  • Google Phones (Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a)

Google Stadia Founder's Edition Details

Stadia Founder's Edition Controller

Stadia Founder's Edition Controller

Currently available for preorder, the Founder's Edition will cost $129.99 and includes the following:

  • Limited-edition Night Blue controller (check out a photo above)
  • Chromecast Ultra (normally retails for $69.99)
  • Three-month Stadia Pro subscription
  • First chance to claim a Stadia Name
  • One 3-month Buddy Pass to give Stadia Pro to a friend

Google Stadia Pro Subscription Details

Stadia Pro is Google's subscription service that players can access as part of Stadia for deals on games, free games, and better streaming capabilities. While the Founder's Edition comes bundled with three months of it (and three months for another friend to subscribe with), it will normally cost $9.99 per month.

Most notably, Stadia Pro will be required to play with up to 4K/60 fps/HDR and 5.1 surround sound capabilities for your Stadia games. (Stadia Base, available in 2020, will let you stream games only up to 1080p/60 fps.)

In addition to the stream quality, Stadia Pro also gives access to exclusive discounts on games for purchase, as well as free games, similar to Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus, that will be made available at a "regular cadence." Those free games will be accessible so long as your Pro subscription is active, similar to PlayStation Plus' free games.

Exit Theatre Mode

Additionally, for a limited time, Stadia Pro will give players full access to Destiny 2, including the base game, all previously released add-ons, and the new expansion and annual pass. Players will even be able to transfer their Destiny 2 Guardian from other platforms (currently, PC and Xbox One are confirmed to support this feature.)

Stadia Pro has all the benefits of Stadia Base as well, which will be an available way to play in 2020. As mentioned previously, Stadia Base supports up to 1080p/ 60 fps streaming with stereo sound. Players can purchase and indefinitely keep any games available via Stadia. Stadia Base, and therefore Stadia Pro, will be available to play in a Chrome browser on any computer, or on Pixel 3 and 3a phones, with plans to expand to other phones over time.

Google Stadia Base

Google Stadia will offer, as mentioned above, Google Stadia Base beginning in 2020. With Stadia Base, players will simply be able to buy games via Stadia and play them on Google's cloud-gaming platform with the following features:

  • Up to 1080p/60fps with stereo sound
  • Buy and keep the games you want
  • Play in a Chrome browser on any computer or on your Pixel 3 or 3a phone (expanding to other phones over time)

All Stadia Base features are, of course, available to Stadia Pro subscribers.

Exit Theatre Mode

Ubisoft has, of course, previously been a partner with Google via last year's Project Stream, which allowed players to play Assassin's Creed Odyssey in Chrome browsers. Google's Phil Harrison actually spoke to IGN about how Assassin's Creed Odyssey is indicative of Google Stadia's third-party plans. And while not listed among Google's launch window games, Google does have its own Stadia first-party studio, and Google's Phil Harrison explained why first-party games will be key to Google Stadia.

“Ubisoft is bringing several fantastic gaming worlds to Stadia at launch and we cannot wait to see players experience them on this game-changing cloud technology,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder & CEO of Ubisoft in a statement provided to IGN. “Starting later this year, Stadia will bring players the possibility to share and enjoy even more memorable gaming moments wherever they choose to play.”

IGN went hands-on with Stadia at GDC 2019 earlier this year.

Google Stadia Controller Details

While a Stadia controller will be available as part of the Founder's edition in a limited edition color, players can also purchase additional controllers for $69 each. Announced colors of the controller include Just Black, Clearly White, and Wasabi.

As previously revealed by Google Stadia, the Stadia controller uses built-in WiFi to connect directly to games running in Google's data centers, and features buttons to capture footage and to access Google Assistant.  The controller features a 3.5mm headset jack, a USB-C port for charging the controller's internal Li-lon battery, wired gameplay, and accessories.

While we didn't get to play Stadia games with it, we did go hands-on with Google Stadia's controller to get a feel for what players can expect from it.

Google has previously revealed the internet speed requirements recommended to play Stadia at both Stadia Pro and Stadia Base tiers. Google's Phil Harrison also previously spoke to IGN about how there never was a Google Stadia console, but instead Stadia was always meant to be a streaming platform.

The rest of the industry has not remained quiet since Google Stadia's launch about cloud gaming. PlayStation's CEO Jim Ryan spoke about the industry's overall shift toward cloud gaming and what that means for consoles.

Stay tuned to IGN for much more on Google Stadia as we approach its launch, and check out our Google Stadia Wiki for details on tech specs, comparisons to next gen consoles, and much more..

11 Huge Destiny Changes Announced for the Franchise - IGN

Bungie had a livestream today to go over their first expansion since their separation from Activision and it features several major changes. Going forward they want to unify their player base and bring everyone together. To do that they've introduced several new ways to deliver content to everyone and have changed up systems while adding much sought after features. Here's a list of the key items you need to know.

Exit Theatre Mode
  • The Destiny franchise is finally adopting the term MMO. That will allow them to do a lot of things that other games have for years. More on that in a minute.
  • Going forward the World will become ever evolving. Destiny 2 will become a platform for future expansions.
  • Destiny 2 can now be played anywhere. That does include PS4, PC, Stadia, and Xbox. It will utilize a cross-save feature meaning you can easily move between each of your choices.
cross-save
  • There will be a base game called Destiny 2 New-Light that will be free-to-play. You will start on the Cosmodrome from Destiny 1 and have access to the majority of the base content of the game.
  • There will never be platform exclusive content again. This is to tear down those barriers Destiny has had separate you from your friends.
  • Destiny 2 will be moved from the Blizzard launcher onto Steam. They will have services setup to help you transfer your saves and/or characters.
  • Bungie has said that only Bungie and the players will decide what happens with the game going forward.
  • Armor in Destiny will now allow from transmogrification meaning you can give your favorite armor set the stats of a piece you like. That armor can then be upgraded from there.
transmog
  • Finishers are being added to each of the character allowing them to perform a fatality like move as you defeat your foes.
  • Crucible Labs will bring beloved Destiny PVP modes from the past back. There's no confirmation if that's the much loved Trials of Osiris, but here's hoping!
  • Everything released up until now will be made available for $40 starting today. Going forward, all content will be delivered ala carte.
  • The upcoming Destiny 2 Shadowkeep expansion will be standalone and does not require the base game. It will cost $35
  • New players will be able to access content much faster than in the past, but Bungie is still determining how long that will be so a player can get accustomed to the world, but not feel overwhelmed.
  • Raids and other substantial content will require the expansions for players entering with Destiny New-Light.
  • While the Destiny 2: Shadowkeep base game will cost $35, the Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Collectors Edition will cost $149.99. It includes an in-game emblem code, a Hive Cryptoglyph Replica, a Metal Luna Mission Container, a Luna Mission Handbook, a Luna Journal, Artifacts from the Golden Age, a digital copy of the soundtrack, and other in-game bonuses.

Rumour: Google Stadia will launch in November, pricing revealed - PC Gamer

Canadian news site Lapresse has published a list of Stadia details, including a November 14 release date, a $169 (presumably Canadian Dollars) Founders Edition and some of the games it will feature at launch.

The Founders Edition will apparently come with a gamepad, a Chromecast Ultra, Destiny 2 and a three month subscription to the service. The Chromecast is going to be necessary, as that's the only way you'll be able to use Stadia at launch, though it will work through any Google device next year.

There will be two subscription services, starting with Stadia Pro, which will let players enjoy 4K at 60 fps, but not all the games will be available with that subscription. Some games will have to be purchased. In 2020, Stadia Basic will offer a cheaper 1080p package, but that won't include any of the games you get at no extra cost with Stadia Pro.

As for the games, Stadia will launch with a 31-strong catalogue, according to the report, from publishers like Ubisoft, Square Enix and Activition. Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which Google used to test its streaming prototype, will be included, along with The Division 2, Doom and all three of the Tomb Raiders.

The minimum requirements are 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbp upload, while 35 Mbps is recommended for playing games in 4K.

It may be that Lapresse has jumped the gun on publishing the details, but we'll find out how accurate they are soon enough. Google's Stadia event will begin at 5 pm BST/9 am PT today.

Nintendo's E3 will center on Pokémon, Zelda and Luigi's Mansion - Engadget

We already knew that Nintendo would be focusing on 2019 games at E3 this year (sorry, Metroid Prime fans). Today, the company has gone a step further and revealed the exact games that will be playable on the show floor: Pokémon Sword and Shield, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (the upcoming remake, not the original), Luigi's Mansion 3 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order. Nintendo said there will be "other games on the show floor," and "details about additional upcoming titles for Nintendo Switch" during its now-traditional Direct video on June 11th.

That means there's still a chance the new Animal Crossing -- which is tentatively scheduled for 2019 at the moment -- will make an appearance at the show. We could also see Astral Chain, a fantasy-action game from Bayonetta developer PlatinumGames, and Super Mario Maker 2, which comes out just a couple of weeks after the show. Heck, maybe we'll get a release date for Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo's next smartphone game, too.

Catch up on all the latest news from E3 2019 here!
