Phil Spencer: xCloud runs 'fine' on 4G - Engadget

Xbox needs cloud gaming to work. Microsoft has been pushing the industry toward a digital-first, streaming future since 2013 -- years before players or infrastructure were remotely ready for the idea. It makes sense: Microsoft is uniquely positioned as a gigantic technology company with deep roots in gaming, and they're able to leverage vast resources and expertise in AI, server infrastructure, hardware and software to set standards of gameplay-delivery systems.

Google has caught on and it's speeding up the game-streaming revolution with Stadia, an ambitious service that promises to run any game on any device at up to 4K and 60fps, with plans to eventually hit 8K streams. Stadia goes live in November.

Microsoft is taking things slower. It pushed streaming too hard at the outset of this console generation and it set them back, helping the PlayStation 4 outsell the Xbox One by a factor of two. Today, Microsoft is purposefully testing its own streaming service, xCloud, starting with a beta of the local, console-streaming component in October.

Players may now be ready for streaming, but the infrastructure is still catching up.

"We're not coming in and trying to tell people to stop doing what they were doing before and to adopt streaming today as the only way that they should play," Xbox head Phil Spencer told Engadget after stepping off the stage at E3. There, he unveiled Project Scarlett, the next Xbox console, scheduled to launch for the holidays in 2020. Scarlett will support 8K (even though no games currently do), 120fps, SSD storage and real-time ray tracing, a staple of the coming generation.

Xbox E3 2019 Briefing

Naturally, Scarlett will support xCloud and Game Pass (Xbox's subscription service). XCloud runs on Azure and comprises two ways to stream: via Microsoft's cloud network (to play on your console), or stream games from your Xbox to another device, essentially turning your box into a personal, local server.

"We're running on 4G," Spencer said. "And it plays fine, I use it. I'm not trying to say it's recreating the experience you have on an Xbox One X, in your family room, connected to your TV. It's a different experience than that. But it does go with you. It is about creating a new, unique experience, not trying to replicate what you have."

Microsoft can control the software, server networks and even the hardware that players use for xCloud, but it can't do anything about existing internet infrastructure. The fact is, home internet connections often suck, especially in rural regions. This is changing with the rollout of 5G and other network advancements, but for now quality varies wildly.

"The out-of-home streaming will dictate by your out-of-bound, out-of-house upload speeds," Spencer said. "Different people have different connection speeds. People can kind of mess with this already today, and we'll work on getting them some specific specs on what they require." He said. "But all of it is around giving people choice and not saying the console you have today is bad or that you shouldn't be playing on a PC today, or somehow downloading your games so you can play them offline is bad."

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake For PS4 Comes On Two Discs, Square Enix Confirms At E3 2019 - GameSpot

Square Enix's E3 2019 press conference started off with an exciting and in-depth presentation of Final Fantasy VII Remake for PS4. The publisher gave us an overview of the game's revamped combat system, which mixes real-time action with the Active-Time Battle system. We also learned that the game will be quite massive, featuring two Blu-ray discs' worth of gameplay content.

We don't yet know exactly why it will require such a large amount of storage. Square Enix had previously said the Final Fantasy VII remake would be multiple parts, but it wasn't clear exactly what that meant. However, the first game (disc maybe?) "will be set in the eclectic city of Midgar and presents a fully standalone gaming experience," according to a press release, effectively expanding on the first leg of the original game.

That wasn't the only Final Fantasy VII news to come out of the press conference; Square Enix also showed off an extended version of the trailer that was revealed during June 9's Final Fantasy concert. This one gave us our first look at Tifa, along with more footage of the revamped battle system.

Square Enix also unveiled two new special editions for the game, including a $330 1st Class edition. All of this comes on the heels of Sunday's night announcement of a March 2020 release date for the much-anticipated remake, which releases exclusively on PS4. Producer Yoshinori Kitase said during the presentation that the team "will not disappoint your expectations." You can read more in our Final Fantasy VII Remake pre-order guide.

E3 2019 is steadily drawing to a close, so check the full schedule to see what presentations are left. And check back here for all the latest and hottest announcements and news updates.

Keanu Reeves was 'breathtaking' at XBox's E3 event - CNN

With his scene-stealing role in the Netflix rom-com, "Always Be My Maybe," and the success of his latest "John Wick" film, Reeves is having a moment.
He made the internet's day Sunday by popping up at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- billed as the world's top video game conference -- in Los Angeles.
Reeves was in the house in an official capacity. He's reportedly in the game, "Cyberpunk 2077," and was there to promote it for XBox.
During Reeves' remarks, YouTuber Peter Sark yelled, "You're breathtaking!" Reeves returned the compliment verbatim, then said we're all breathtaking.
For the record, Sark's outburst earned him a free copy of the game, according to a tweet from the official "Cyberpunk 2077" account.
Naturally, Twitter went wild over Reeves' appearance on stage and in the game.
"Keanu Reeves wont stop until he's infiltrated every aspect of our lives," one person tweeted.
Please let this come to pass.

Razer’s 'mental performance' drink probably won't quench its thirst - Engadget

Razer

Razer wants to tackle another part of the gaming experience -- namely, the drinks you need to keep your momentum going. It's introducing Respawn (no connection to that Respawn), a "mental performance" drink mix that's meant to keep your focus sharp for long periods. No, it's not a direct knock-off of its most conspicuous rival, G Fuel. You'll find a few familiar ingredients like choline and Vitamin B, and it's equally sugar-free, but there's none of the taurine and less caffeine (95mg versus 150mg). The Razer-owned brand doesn't want to risk the crash you get with energy drinks -- this is meant for those hours-long sessions where you don't want to slip.

To no one's surprise, it won't come cheap. You can buy Respawn in 20-pack boxes for $25 in flavors like Blue Raspberry, Green Apple, Pomegranate Watermelon and Tropical Pineapple. And if you want to flaunt your fondness for the brand by getting the official shaker cup? That's another $30 -- and no, there's no Chroma lighting to match your PC. Respawn is available now in the US through both Amazon and Razer's websie, so you at least won't have to wait to give it a try.

The introduction comes somewhat out of left field, even for a company known to broaden is horizons, but it's not shocking. Although Respawn is technically a stand-alone company, it could serve as a way to push the Razer brand in the gaming community. After all, numerous streamers (like DrDisRespect and Viss) have G Fuel sponsorships. This could put Razer in front of a similar number of eyeballs, even if they don't immediately associate it with Respawn. It'll also give Razer a side business that isn't as easily destabilized by the ups and downs of gaming hardware.
