The GeForce RTX 2070 Super & RTX 2060 Super Review: Smaller Numbers, Bigger Performance - AnandTech

After a long quiet period in the realm of high-end GPUs, things are about to get exciting again. Last month AMD announced their new mid-to-high range of video cards, the Radeon RX 5700 series, based on their new Navi GPU architecture and associated 7nm Navi 10 GPU. AMD has already revealed essentially everything about these cards in advance, and that launch is fittingly coming up on Sunday, July 7th (7/7).

But first, NVIDIA would like to have a word.

Ever since Computex, NVIDIA has been teasing a “Super” announcement of their own. And this morning, that announcement is finally coming to fruition. NVIDIA is launching a mid-generation kicker for their mid-to-high-end video card lineup in the form of their GeForce RTX 20 series Super cards. Based on the same family of Turing GPUs as the original GeForce RTX 20 series cards, these new Super cards – all suffixed Super, appropriately enough – come with new configurations and new clockspeeds. They are, essentially, NVIDIA’s 2019 card family for the $399+ video card market.

When they are released on July 9th, the GeForce RTX 20 series Super cards are going to be sharing store shelves with the rest of the GeForce RTX 20 series cards. Some cards like the RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 are set to go away, while other cards like the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2060 will remain on the market as-is. In practice, it’s probably best to think of the new cards as NVIDIA executing as either a price cut or a spec bump – depending on if you see the glass as half-empty or half-full – all without meaningfully changing their price tiers.

In terms of performance, the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 Super cards aren’t going to bring anything new to the table. In fact if we’re being blunt, the RTX 2070 Super is basically a slightly slower RTX 2080, and the RTX 2060 Super may as well be the RTX 2070. So instead, what has changed is the price that these performance levels are available at, and ultimately the performance-per-dollar ratios in parts of NVIDIA’s lineup. The performance of NVIDIA’s former $699 and $499 cards will now be available for $499 and $399, respectively. This leaves the vanilla RTX 2060 to hold the line at $349, and the upcoming RTX 2080 Super to fill the $699 spot. Which means if you’re in the $400-$700 market for video cards, your options are about to get noticeably faster.

The timing on all of this is quite interesting, of course. NVIDIA is launching these cards just in time to match AMD’s own Radeon RX 5700 launch. And while NVIDIA’s official line is that this launch is driven by economies of scale and slow card sales due to poor pricing – both valid points that I will grant NVIDIA – to call a spade a spade this is clearly NVIDIA looking to counter AMD’s launch. AMD showed their cards early (literally and figuratively), so NVIDIA and the rest of the world were able to see what kind of performance AMD is expecting to get and at what prices those cards will roll out.

Ultimately by launching faster cards at $400 and $500 now, NVIDIA is looking to protect their massive market share while moving the goalposts on AMD (ed: or maybe just removing the football entirely). After today, the next move is AMD’s, but as we’ll see in our benchmarks of the new RTX 20 Super cards, they’ll need to react if they want to maintain their momentum. In the meantime, I think it’s fair to say that everyone is just happy to see pricing come down on NVIDIA’s capable but overpriced Turing video cards.

Launching July 9th: GeForce RTX 2070 Super & GeForce RTX 2060 Super

Getting into the meat of today’s review, let’s take a quick look at the specs for NVIDIA’s new cards, the GeForce RTX 2070 Super and GeForce RTX 2060 Super. As I mentioned before, these are by and large NVIDIA’s 2080 and 2070 vanilla cards slightly tweaked and given lower model numbers. This allows NVIDIA to crank up their performance without actually cutting prices at their major price points. Neither card is exactly identical to the 2018 card its borrowing so heavily from – there are small specification differences for binning and product differentiation reasons – but even in the case of the RTX 2070, we’re talking about just a 4% performance deficit versus the RTX 2080.

We’ll start off with the RTX 2070 Super. This card makes the biggest leap among the new RTX 20 series Super card lineup, as its predecessor, the RTX 2070 vanilla, was already using a fully-enabled TU106 GPU. As a result, in order to crank up the performance, NVIDIA has made the jump to the TU104 GPU, which previously was only used for the RTX 2080. Juxtaposed against the RTX 2080 (and forthcoming RTX 2080 Super), this card is a more “traditional” 70 card, in that it’s now based on a cut-down version of the same GPU in the 80 card.

All told, NVIDIA has disabled 8 of TU104’s 48 SMs here, leaving a card with 40 SMs, or 2560 Turing CUDA cores. To make up for this, NVIDIA has cranked up clockspeeds a bit; RTX 2070 Super has higher base and boost clocks than the RTX 2080, which helps it to narrow what gap there is to start with. If you look at pure SM throughput, the RTX 2070 should deliver around 90% of RTX 2080’s compute/texturing/geometry performance; but because its 64 ROPs are fully-enabled and clocked higher than RTX 2080, in practice it trails the RTX 2080 by just 4% at 2560x1440.

Meanwhile on the memory side of matters, things remain unchanged. Both TU104 and TU106 sport 256-bit memory busses, and all of the 2070 cards are fully populating this with 8GB of GDDR6 clocked at 14Gbps. This means that the RTX 2070 Super doesn’t have any more memory bandwidth than its vanilla counterpart, but then it also means it has just as much memory bandwidth as the RTX 2080.

The drawback here is that with RTX 2080-like performance comes RTX 2080-like power consumption. The TDP of the card is 215 Watts, exactly the same as the RTX 2080 and 40W higher than the RTX 2070 vanilla. On paper, NVIDIA’s energy efficiency actually takes a small hit here because of this – it’s less than RTX 2080 performance for the same TDP – which is in part a consequence of using higher clockspeeds. But with the cards’ performance being so close, in practice it’s a negligible shift.

The target market for the new RTX 2070 Super then is largely the same as the RTX 2080 it borrows so liberally from. The RTX 2070 isn’t quite enough to drive 4K resolution gaming – that’s a job for the RTX 2080 Ti – but it is extremely capable for 2560x1440p. Alternatively, these days the 2080/2070S does pretty well in ray traced games at 1080p, though it still varies some from game to game.

Meanwhile, coming in below the RTX 2070 Super at the new price tier of $399 is the RTX 2060 Super. This is a card that is for all intents and purposes a RTX 2070 at a lower price; it uses an ever-so-slightly cut-down version of TU106 to deliver performance that is within 1% of the RTX 2070. All told, NVIDIA has done something fairly similar here as with the RTX 2070 Super, disabling some SMs and cranking up the clockspeeds to compensate. The end result is a card with 34 of 36 SMs enabled, and some extra clocks to help minimize the gap. By the numbers it delivers 96% of RTX 2070’s shading/texturing/geometry performance, but 102% of its ROP/rasterization performance. Or to frame things relative to the RTX 2060, it’s about 14% faster thanks to its combination of SM and clockspeed advantage.

Equally (if perhaps not more) important here however is the memory configuration. Whereas the RTX 2060 vanilla comes with an awkward 6GB of GDDR6 – leaving it just a bit short on capacity and bandwidth – the RTX 2060 Super gets a full 8GB. This means that it can deliver just as much VRAM capacity and bandwidth as the 2070 and 2080 cards – 33% more of each than the vanilla 2060 – which not only helps it a lot in performance, but also in future-proofing. NVIDIA for its part isn’t retiring the vanilla RTX 2060, but for just $50 over that card, there’s a very compelling argument to ignore the hobbled 6GB card entirely.

But, like the RTX 2070 Super, the performance bump comes with a power consumption bump. If the RTX 2070 Super is a pocket RTX 2080, then the RTX 2060 Super is a pocket RTX 2070. This means the TDP has gone up from 160W on the 2060 vanilla to 175W on the 2060 Super – the smaller jump being since both cards use the same TU106 GPU – as these are the same Turing GPUs and NVIDIA’s energy efficiency hasn’t improved at all here.

Within the NVIDIA stack, the RTX 2060 Super is basically the lowest tier of 2560x1440p card. This is a notion that hasn’t quite existed before, but the RTX 2060 Super is so powerful that 1080p almost leaves the card underutilized in a lot of today’s games. Consequently this may very well make it the most interesting card launching today, as while it’s essentially just a 2070 for $100 less, at $399 it’s moving into that mid-range sweet spot that more fondly remembered cards like the GTX 970 and GTX 1070 occupied.

Launching July 23rd: GeForce RTX 2080 Super

Very briefly, we also have the matter of NVIDIA’s final RTX 20 series Super card to touch upon: the GeForce RTX 2080 Super.

Just like the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070, the RTX 2080 Super is getting a mid-generation kicker. However this card won’t be launching for a few more weeks – specifically, July 23rd – and isn’t part of today’s review. In fact it was only yesterday that NVIDIA even released the card’s specifications. So we’ll deal with this card in due time, but for now, it’s going to be the replacement for the regular RTX 2080 at the $699 price point.

Unlike the other two RTX 20 series Super cards, the RTX 2080 Super is getting a slightly different treatment. The original RTX 2080 already used a mostly-enabled TU104 GPU, so while NVIDIA is shifting to a fully-enabled GPU – enabling another 2 SMs – that alone won’t do much for the card’s performance. Instead is going to rely on a mix of clockspeed bumps for both the GPU and the memory.

On the GPU clockspeed front, the card will ship with a boost clock of 1815MHz, the highest of all the RTX 20 series cards. Meanwhile, in a first for any Turing card, the memory clockspeed is being increased from 14Gbps to 15.5Gbps, an 11% increase to better feed the fully-enabled TU104 GPU. 16Gbps GDDR6 chips have always been in the memory roadmaps, so this is where NVIDIA will first introduce them.

The tradeoff however, is that like the other Super cards, TDPs are going up. The RTX 2080 Super will be a 250 Watt card, 35W higher than the RTX 2080 and matching the TDP of the top-tier RTX 2080 Ti. As I simply can’t imagine a TU104 card matching RTX 2080 Ti, it would seem that NVIDIA’s energy efficiency is going to take a hit here. NVIDIA’s high clocks here mean that they have to really open up on power delivery in order to allow the TU104 GPU to sustain over 1800MHz, which comes at a fairly expensive point on the voltage/frequency curve.

We’ll know more for sure here in a few weeks, so stay tuned for that.

Product Positioning, Availability & the Competition

Coming full circle here, let’s quickly touch on pricing, positioning, and availability for the new RTX cards.

While today is the review embargo for the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super, it’s not a hard launch. The cards won’t go on sale until Tuesday, July 9th, 2 days after AMD’s cards go on sale. As a result the launch does walk a fine line to the bad old days of paper launches, but with AMD’s launch awkwardly falling on a Sunday to begin with, in practice it’s not enough of a difference to matter. The launch of NVIDIA’s new cards is, intentionally or not, invariably intertwined with the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 5700 series.

In terms of launch cards then, NVIDIA and its partners are going to hit the ground running here with everything from reference cards to fully custom cards. These are the same TU104/TU106 GPUs using the same memory, so board partners can quickly tap their existing 2080/2070 designs to bring new cards to market. Similarly, card volume shouldn’t be a big issue, though with demand somewhat front-loaded, there’s still the potential for sell-outs.

NVIDIA for its part will once again be releasing their own reference cards. However in a change from last year’s factory overclocked Founders Edition cards, NVIDIA will not be overclocking their cards or charging a premium for them. Their reference cards are still going to be sold under the Founders Edition branding, however they should perform identically to any other reference-clocked cards. And fittingly, they won’t carry a price premium. Meanwhile, as is usually the case, the cards will be sold directly by NVIDIA.

As an added kicker, NVIDIA is also launching with a video game bundle right out of the gate. The new RTX 20 series Super cards will be getting a two game bundle that consists of Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Remedy’s upcoming Control. NVIDIA for its part has been avoiding game bundles at launch for its high-end cards for most of the past few years, so it’s noteworthy to see them included here. As I mentioned early on, NVIDIA is looking to increase the value of their cards without actually cutting prices, so this is another way to achieve that.

In the meantime, NVIDIA’s RTX 2080 and RTX 2070 cards will be heading off to retirement. Officially, NVIDIA isn’t saying how retailers will be getting rid of any remaining inventory, but similar to full-fledged video card series launches, I would expect to see some sales here, especially as the new cards significantly undercut these outgoing cards.

The competition for the new Super cards will of course be AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 series. There are no perfect 1-to-1 comparisons here since (at current prices, at least) AMD and NVIDIA are selling at slightly different prices. But the RTX 2060 Super is clearly positioned to squeeze both the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT, while the RTX 2070 Super would be NVIDIA’s trump card over the RX 5700 XT. To what degree of course remains to be seen in a few days when AMD’s new cards launch.

All told, NVIDIA’s plan is to have a technological and power efficiency advantage over AMD’s cards, and if AMD’s performance estimates are accurate, then to meet or beat them on value as well. In particular, AMD is not bringing any new graphics features to the table that can match Turing’s more advanced features such as ray tracing and variable rate shading, so expect to see NVIDIA continue to wield that against AMD.

Taking a closer look at the RTX 2070 Super & RTX 2060 Super Founders Edition cards, there aren’t too many surprises to be found. Since we’re dealing with a mid-generation kicker here, NVIDIA has opted to stick with their original RTX 20 series reference designs for the new cards, rather than design wholly new boards. This has allowed them to get the new cards out relatively quickly, and to be honest there’s not a whole lot NVIDIA could do here that wouldn’t be superficial. As a result, the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super are more or less identical to the RTX 2080 and RTX 2060 respectively.

As I noted earlier, the Founders Edition cards themselves are now purely reference cards. NVIDIA isn’t doing factory overclocks this time around – the high reference clock speeds making that process a bit harder – so these cards are very straightforward examples of what the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super can deliver in terms of performance. It also means that these cards no longer carry a price premium, with NVIDIA selling them at the $499 and $399 MSRPs respectively.

Starting with the RTX 2070 Super then, possibly the only material change is quite literally in the materials. NVIDIA has taken the 2080 reference design and given the center segment of shroud a reflective coating. This, along with the Super branding, are the only two visually distinctive changes from the RTX 2080 reference design. For better or worse, the reflective section is every bit the fingerprint magnet that you probably expect, so thankfully most people aren’t handling their video cards as much as hardware reviewers are.

In terms of cooling then, this means the RTX 2070 Super gets the RTX 2080’s cooler as well. At a high level this is a dual axial open air cooler, with NVIDIA sticking to this design after first introducing it last year. The open air cooler helps NVIDIA keep their load noise levels down, though idle noise levels on all of the RTX 20 series reference cards has been mediocre, and the new Super cards are no different. The fact that this reference design isn’t a blower means that the RTX 2070 Super isn’t fully self-exhausting, relying on the computer chassis itself to help move hot air away from the card. For most builders this isn’t an issue, but if you’re building a compact system or a system with limited airflow, you’ll want to make sure your system can handle the heat from a 215W video card.

Under the hood, the RTX 2070 Super inherits the RTX 2080’s heatsink design, with a large aluminum heatsink running the full length of the card. Deeper still, the heatsink is connected to the TU104 GPU with a vapor chamber, to help move heat away from the GPU more efficiently. Overall the RTX 2070 Super has the same 215W TDP as the RTX 2080, so it behaves virtually identically to the latter card. Which is to say that it has no problem keeping its cool.

Since this card is needed for further testing I haven’t shucked the card down to its PCB, but according to NVIDIA the power delivery system is also identical to the RTX 2080. In this respective NVIDIA’s reference designs are solid, and while they won’t be enough for hardcore overclockers, it’s more than sufficient for the kind of overclocking that can be done with the reference cooler. Of particular note, the maximum power target for the card is +20%, which means it can have its TDP increased to 258W. Accordingly, the card is fed by the same 6pin + 8pin power system as on the RTX 2080, more than guaranteeing the card can be fed up to its power target limit.

Finally, for display I/O, the card gets the continuing NVIDIA high-end standard of 3x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0b, and 1x VirtualLink port (DP video + USB data + 30W USB power).

GeForce RTX 2060 Super

Shifting gears, for building the RTX 2060 Super NVIDIA has gone the opposite direction, using the RTX 2060 reference design as the base. The 2060 itself wasn’t all that different from the 2080 – and the same holds for its Super variant – but there are a few notable distinctions from the newly minted RTX 2070 Super.

In terms of overall design, the RTX 2060 Super Founders Edition card retains the same design aesthetic – reflective bits and all – but it comes in a smaller package. Overall the card is just 9 inches long, which is 1.5 inches shorter than the RTX 2070 Super. The cooling system has also been simplified a bit – mostly forgoing the vapor chamber – though it still retains the card’s full-body heatsink and dual fan open air cooler.

With a 175W TDP, the card relies on a single 8pin PCIe power connection at the rear of the card for the extra power it needs. Overclockers meanwhile will be able to pump up the power target by 22%, allowing the card’s TDP to be raised to a maximum of 213W.

Outside of its smaller stature, the other big departure for the RTX 2060 Super from its more powerful sibling is in the display I/O configuration. As with the regular RTX 2060, the Super card drops the 3rd DisplayPort for a DL-DVI-D port, giving the card a final tally of 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0b, 1x DL-DVI-D, and a sole VirtualLink port.

As for our hardware testbed, it too has been updated for the 2019 video card release cycle.

Internally we’ve made a pretty big change, going from an Intel HEDT platform (Core i7-7820X) to a standard desktop platform based around an overclocked Core i9-9900K and Z390 chipset. While we’ve used HEDT platforms for the GPU testbed for the last decade, HEDT is becoming increasingly irrelevant/compromised for gaming; while the extra PCIe lanes are nice, these platforms haven’t delivered the best CPU performance for games as of late.

By contrast, desktop processors with 8 cores now provide more than enough cores, and they also provide far better clockspeeds, delivering more of the single/lightly-threaded performance that games need. Furthermore, as SLI and Crossfire are on the rocks, the extra PCIe lanes aren’t as necessary as they once were.

On a side note, I had originally hoped to cycle in a Ryzen 3000 platform at this point, particularly for PCIe 4.0. However the timing of all of these hardware launches meant that we needed to go with an established platform, as it takes a week or so to build and validate a new GPU testbed. Plus with Ryzen 3000 not launching for another week, we wouldn’t have been able to use it for this review anyhow.

Otherwise the rest of our 2019 GPU testbed is relatively straightforward. With 32GB of RAM and a high-end Phison E12-based NVMe SSD, the system and any video cards being tested as well-fed. Enclosing all of this for our real-world style testing is our trusty NZXT Phantom 630 Windowed Edition case.

While this may technically be the conclusion of this specific review, in many ways the launch of NVIDIA’s new RTX 20 series Super cards is the start of something bigger. With video card launches set only days apart, NVIDIA has – if unexpectedly – fired the first salvo in the latest battle for the high-end of the video card market. In doing so, they’ve improved the value on their Turing cards by a moderate but much-needed margin, and in the process have set the pace for the cards to follow. So although today is NVIDIA’s day, in practice this launch part of a much larger picture that will become much clearer in a few days.

What then, does the launch of the RTX 20 series Super cards mean for the market? Looking solely within the NVIDIA product stack for the moment, it’s a welcome development for a line of cards that was big on die size but short on value. But this is mid-generation kicker that is just that: a refresh of existing hardware. The new Super parts are still based on the same TU104 and TU106 GPUs that have been on the market since the latter part of 2018, and as they are still the most cutting-edge GPUs out there in terms of features, they’re not at risk of getting outdated any time soon. The flip side of that coin is that since this is a refresh, NVIDIA isn’t bringing anything new to the table in terms of hardware features. This is, above all else, a modest realignment of NVIDIA’s product stack to ensure they remain competitive while spurring some new video card sales in slow market.

The good news then is that if you are in the market for buying a video card – particularly for new system builds – then this latest round in the GPU wars means that the amount of performance you get for the money is getting even better. The GeForce RTX 2060 Super is all but an RTX 2070 in name and in price, delivering virtually identical performance for $100 less than the original RTX 2070. And the GeForce RTX 2070 Super, while not quite a facsimile of the RTX 2080, delivers much of those gains, offering 96% of the RTX 2080’s performance for 71% of the price – or nearly some $200 cheaper than what that level of performance cost just last month.

For buyers looking to upgrade, however, things are a bit trickier. NVIDIA’s realignment improves their price-to-performance ratio; however, it doesn’t get around the fact that within NVIDIA’s lineup, none of the Turing architecture video cards deliver a full generational performance upgrade over their predecessors; the performance, partially a consequence of going with 12nm, just isn’t there. So these new Super cards don’t change the calculus involved in deciding whether to upgrade from Pascal – that it’s probably best to hold of until the next real generation of cards. However Maxwell (GTX 900 series) owners have a little more thinking to do, as this realignment means that GTX 980 and GTX 970 owners finally have similarly priced upgrades that are more than true generational updates in features and performance.

Past that, because the new Super cards are so similar to their predecessors, there’s little to say that we haven’t already touched on before. Despite tinkering with clockspeeds and SM counts, NVIDIA has held the line on energy efficiency, so the new Super cards slot in nicely within the Turing product family. Energy efficiency hasn’t gone up, but it also hasn’t gone down, and the Turing lineup remains the most energy efficient line of cards out there. Similarly, NVIDIA remains unchallenged in terms of hardware features, as they will remain the only vendor shipping hardware ray tracing and variable rate shading technology for 2019.

But with that said, we don’t have the complete picture of the high-end video card market; that will only come once AMD’s cards launch in a few days. Given that AMD’s cards actually go on sale first here – NVIDIA will follow 2 days later – there’s really no sense in making specific suggestions at this time. Rather we’ll see where the dust settles on July 7th when AMD’s new Radeon cards launch. So in many respects, today’s NVIDIA launch is a prelude of a more important battle that takes place in a few days.

In the meantime, by launching their cards first, NVIDIA gets the first-mover advantage. They have shown their hand with better priced Turing cards, a modest improvement that none the less addresses NVIDIA’s one real weakness with the RTX 20 series. Now it’s going to be up to AMD to make the second move, and decide how they want to respond to NVIDIA. It risks becoming a bit of an exaggered stratagem at this point, but as the most important event to happen since the launch of the RTX 20 series almost a year ago, we’re about to see some of the most exciting times of the 2019 unfold in the video card market.

Apex Legends Season 2: Battle Charge Update - Early patch notes, Battle Pass, Wattson and more - Dexerto

Apex Legends Season 2 is officially on its way, with a major update just hours away which will include major changes to the map, a brand-new legend in the form of Wattson, and a brand-new Battle Pass which will give players some brand new cosmetic items.

Fans of the popular battle royale game have been anxious to get their hands on the second season of the title since Season 1 ended on June 18, with some huge improvements on the way that should freshen it up after a disappointing first season.

The second season, which is titled "Battle Charge," will continue the overarching storyline of the game, with Leviathians and flyers invading the island following an EMP which destroyed the repulsors which kept them at bay. Wattson will also be introduced as the latest Legend to take to the battlefield in search of victory.

New Legend - Wattson

Just like the first season, Apex Legends Season 2 kicks off with a brand new character added to the game in the form of Wattson. The mastermind behind the arena in which the Legends do battle, Wattson uses electricity as her main weapon.

While Wattson can use the power of electrical currents to do damage, her main role is as a support character, with her ultimate ability allowing her to place a pylon that repairs damaged shields on her teammates. Her tactical ability also lets her place an electrified fence, which slows down and damages her opponents, putting a dangerous barrier between her team and their enemies. 

Wattson's full abilities are:

  • Tactical Ability: Perimeter Security - Connect nodes to create electrified fences that damage and slow enemies.
  • Passive Ability: Spark of Genius - Ultimate Accelerants fully charge your Ultimate Ability, and standing near interception pylons boosts your Tactical Ability recharge.
  • Ultimate Ability: Interception Pylon - Place an electrified pylon that destroys incoming ordnance and repairs damaged shields as long as it stands. (Max: 3)

Apex Legends Season 2 Battle Pass

Many would agree that Season 1 had a pretty underwhelming Battle Pass, and Respawn worked as hard as possible to make sure fans were more excited by the second version by ramping up the cosmetics found inside. 

A major part of these improvements includes daily and weekly challenges. Much like rival game Fortnite, players will receieve brand-new challenges daily, alongside a number of weekly challenges that will be more challenging to complete than the daily ones, but provide a greater reward for your efforts. 

The developers also confirmed that the Season 2 Battle Pass will take less time to max out at Level 100, making it easier to receieve one of the three legendary skins that will be found in the Battle Pass.

Apex Legends Ranked Leagues

A major change going into Season 2 is the implementation of Ranked Leagues. Designed to reward players who are eager for a more competitive Apex Legends experience, players will be placed into one of six Ranked Leagues depending on their performance in-game, and can be promoted or relegated based on wins, kills, and score from matches you play. 

The lowest rank in the game is Bronze, with the best labelled as Apex Predators. Players will be placed in matches with opponents of a similar level, so you won't have to worry too much about facing the game's greatest players if you find yourself struggling away in Bronze. 

Ranked Leagues kick off as soon as Season 2 launches, so players wont have long to wait until they can test their mettle against opponents.

When does the Apex Legends Season 2 patch release?

Apex Legends Season 2 officially kicks off on Tuesday, July 2, although Respawn have yet to give an official release time for the major update which will accompany it. Most updates for the game release at 10 AM PST / 1PM EST / 6:00 PM BST, so it's likely that we will see a similar launch time for this update too. 

The developers have also revealed how big the update file will be, with console players on Xbox One and PS4 requiring 20GB of space to download the Battle Charge patch, while those on PC will need to ensure they have 18GB of room on their hard drives if they want to get their hands on this update.

Respawn Entertainment haven't released the Apex Legends Season 2 patch notes just yet, but we'll be sure to update this article once they become available. Below are some of the things we know are coming ahead of the official notes.

Almost one month after the Cardinal Red Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ were introduced, UK carrier EE has announced that it’ll now be exclusively selling the two flagships alongside a previous unannounced Cardinal Red version of the Galaxy S10e.


The new variant of Samsung’s compact flagship is, as expected, identical to the other models that are on sale. There’s a decent 6GB of RAM available to the user alongside 128GB of internal storage, the latter of which is expandable via a microSD card slot. Also, because this version has been designed for the UK market, Samsung’s high-end Exynos 9820 can be found on the inside.


Regarding the external side of things, the front of the smartphone features a 5.8-inch Infinity-O display that skips the curved edges Samsung typically uses on its flagship models. This is accompanied by a 10-megapixel selfie snapper and a dual-camera setup on the rear that includes a primary 12-megapixel variable aperture sensor and a secondary 16-megapixel camera paired with a super-wide-angle lens. 

Although the Galaxy S10e is also sold in the United States, there’s no word on a local release for the Cardinal Red variant. Nevertheless, if you’re interested in the device it’s worth noting that Samsung already offers a range of colors – Prism Black, Prism White, Prism Blue, and Flamingo Pink.

Sketchy report says Apple to launch iPhone without Face ID, may feature under-screen Touch ID instead - 9to5Mac

In a sketchy report published on several Chinese media sites yesterday, including Mashdigi, Apple is purportedly considering to make a new iPhone model for the Chinese market, as it faces stiff price competition from domestic manufacturers like Oppo and Huawei.

Interestingly, the report pinpoints the Face ID sensor as a key area for cost-cutting. Instead, Apple would supposedly add back Touch ID to its flagship iPhone lines, either on the back of the phone or as an under-screen sensor.

Apple has made special accommodations for the Chinese market before, but never to this extent. For example, with iPhone XS and iPhone XR, Apple sells a physical dual-SIM card model whereas the rest of the world can only use dual SIM with the combination of eSIM and one physical SIM card.

We are treating this report as pretty sketchy. Whilst the idea of a Touch ID-under-screen device was flourishing in the rumor mill ahead of the radical 2017 redesign, Apple quashed the possibility by going all in on Face ID with iPhone X, and we haven’t really heard anything about Apple’s experimentation with Touch ID since.

If the purpose of removing Face ID is to lower the end-user sale price of the iPhone, it also seems a bit counterintuitive that the replacement would be an advanced form of under-screen fingerprint recognition, which is surely also an expensive component.

Assuming it can be effective, it would also be weird to limit this Touch ID new iPhone to China exclusively. Such a diversion in hardware would represent a big investment of Apple’s resources and the company would want to sell the model in more regions to maximise return on investment and profitability.

Finally, if you still want to believe this, there is almost no chance that this iPhone model is launching this year. Ming-Chi Kuo and other analysts have repeatedly stated that the 2019 iPhone lineup will consist of iterative updates to iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

The 2019 iPhones will retain the Face ID sensor and accompanying notch. The big upgrades for this year are camera-focused changes; the iPhone 11 will feature a new triple-camera system sporting an ultrawide lens and a polarizing camera bump design.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 launch confirmed - with big camera tease - TechRadar

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 release date is nearly with us, as the official launch of the new powerful handset from the South Korean brand has been confirmed for August 7 in New York.

The invite, which teases new intriguing selfie camera capabilities, shows the S Pen (Samsung's in-built stylus for the Note range) circling around a new sensor - and the link to the invite says that the launch will 'take the Galaxy's connected ecosystem to the next level'.

On Wednesday August 7, the new Galaxy Note 10 will appear on stage in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center (the same as the Note 9 launch).

This launch event will be later in the day locally for New York: 4pm EDT (1pm PDT, 9pm BST, 6am AEST).

This is hardly an unexpected leak, given we've been seeing rumors of a similar launch date for a few weeks now - and the Samsung CEO himself name-checked the phone to TechRadar at a recent media briefing

What are we expecting from the Note 10 launch?

The Galaxy Note 10 is about to get some of the bezel-less Samsung Galaxy S10 treatment along with a punch-hole display, according to the latest Note 10 leaks.

However, the front-facing camera that fills that punch-hole is poised to be center-aligned, and there appears to be only one camera peering out of the display. The Galaxy 10 Plus has two front cameras in a wide oval-shaped hole and the S10 5G has three front cameras.

The rear cameras also appear to be shifted to the left side for a vertical triple-lens camera setup – the extra camera is likely for a depth-sensing "Time of Flight" camera.

And, of course, the S Pen is due to get more tricks in the 2019 model. We might see the RAM max out at 12GB in certain versions, and we're expecting the chipset to get a Snapdragon 855 in the regular and rumored 'Pro'/'Plus' higher-specced version.

What about that 'connected ecosystem'? Well, there's been a lot of chatter around Bixby being given ever-greater powers, as well as Samsung SmartThings smart home play getting a big upgrade - so it might not be just the new Note that lands at the event in August.

Samsung needs to go a long way to improve both Bixby (the voice assistant which launched to muted interest) and the smart home play, where it's already far behind the likes of Google and Amazon. 

That said, the South Korean brand has a lot of users that it can leverage (in a similar way to Apple and its walled-garden ecosystem) - so perhaps the future will have another player in the connected home space.

Russia's plans to build a hypersonic weapon system that can travel at more than 20 times the speed of sound, and also evade US missile defenses, has predictably rattled the world. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted that the Avangard weapons system would be ready by 2019. But some obstacles lie ahead that could impact production, CNBC reported. Specifically, the Kremlin needs to find another source of carbon fiber material to build the Avanguard hypersonic glide vehicles.

Russia's current supply of carbon fiber material is unable to withstand the extreme temperatures of hypersonic flight. According to a US intelligence report reviewed by CNBC, Russia is hunting for an alternative source of carbon fiber, but so far has had no luck. "It's expected that they will make no more than 60 of these hypersonic weapons because it's just proving to be too expensive to develop," an anonymous official told CNBC.

But one nuclear weapons expert told Engadget that 60 units is a pretty significant number. "To me the most surprising part was that someone would say that 60 units is 'a few'. I would say that 60 is rather quite a few. My take on Avangard has always been that it's a niche capability without a clear mission. I was expecting that Russia will stop after deploying maybe a dozen of them," said Pavel Podvig, a senior research fellow at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research.

As it stands, the current plan is to reach initial operational capacity of the Avangard by 2020, according to Russian news reports. The current goal is to build 12 weapons by 2027, so it will be a long time until Russia is able to reach 60 weapons. Meanwhile, the US Army plans to field a battery of its own hypersonic missiles by 2023.
