Fortnite Season 10 Patch Notes: BRUTE, Rift Points, And More Detailed - GameSpot

Fortnite Season 10--or Season X, as developer Epic Games is calling it--has officially begun. Ushering in its launch, Epic has also issued update 10.00 for the wildly popular battle royale title, and published patch notes alongside it to detail everything that's new.

As always for the start of a new season, there are a number of big new features for players to enjoy. One of the major new additions is the B.R.U.T.E. suit, a two-person vehicle that lets one player operate the turret and the other move the machine around.

There’s also Rift Zones, which have been created by the Zero Point Explosion. “Locations once thought to be lost are beginning to appear, but they aren’t the same as they once were. Drop in and explore to discover what mysterious gameplay changes they have in store.”

These Rift Points and the Zero Point Explosion are a key part of Season 10's theme. "Time is twisted and the Zero Point has become volatile," Epic explains. "Whether you’re nostalgic for the past or excited for the future, there will be plenty for you to discover all Season long. Locations once thought to be lost have begun to appear on the island, but they aren’t the same as they once were.

"Board the Battle Bus and drop in, but keep an eye to the skies to spot the new Season X mech vehicle, the B.R.U.T.E. Crashing on the island as the Battle Bus takes off, these merciless mechs seat two players and works best with a partner, so grab a squadmate, hop in, load up, and roll out."

Weapons + Items

  • B.R.U.T.E.
    • This vehicle can be operated by up to two players. If two players are operating it, one (the driver) controls movement, while the other (the gunner) rains down missiles and shotgun shots.
    • The driver is able to:
      • Dash into combat.
      • Super Jump to victory.
      • Stomp enemies and structures into the ground.
        • Anything you would normally harvest will grant materials when destroyed.

        • Headshot Multiplier: 1.5x
    • Missile Launcher
      • Fires up to 10 missiles at once.
      • Holding down Trigger will begin loading missiles.
      • After releasing Trigger, or after 10 missiles have been loaded, all missiles will automatically fire.
    • New Mechanic: Overshield
      • Consumes 200 of any Material type to create a personal overshield for 5 seconds to protect you in the mech.
  • Vaulted
    • Baller
    • Quad Crasher
    • Flint Knock Pistol
    • Shadow Bomb
    • Semi-Auto Sniper

    • Mounted Turret
    • Air Strike
    • Itemized Glider Redeploy (still available in large team modes)
      • Over time, we have added many mobility options, both itemized and map-based. We feel that Season X is better experienced with a reduction in mobility. As with all changes, we’ll keep a close eye on how this affects the player experience.

  • All Campfires now heal vehicles.
  • The Storm Scout Sniper Rifle no longer has perfect hip-fire accuracy after aiming down sights.

      • More information about Missions can be found in the Battle Pass and Challenges tabs.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue involving players getting stuck under a ramp as it’s placed.

Events

  • Arena Game Mode updates!
    • Season kicks off with Solos and Trios Arena.
    • Hype will be reset at the start of Season X, with a new scoring structure in place.

The Morning After: The best wireless earbuds we've used so far - Engadget

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

August is upon us. We're ready to make the call on the "best true wireless earbuds" around, and Samsung's next generation of new hardware is starting with its Galaxy Tab S6. Oh, and you can try out the Star Trek holodeck with five friends this fall. Really.

It's hard to recommend anything else.Sony WF-1000XM3 review: Simply the best true wireless earbuds

What makes these $230 earbuds "a hell of a deal," according to Billy Steele? Excellent sound quality, a full-featured companion app, great battery life, an improved Ambient Sound and active noise cancellation make for an excellent start.

Meet the much-improved keyboard case and stylus.Samsung's Galaxy Tab S6 refines the 'desktop' experience

We were already expecting to see Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 this month, but first, it closed out July with a new tablet. The Galaxy Tab S6 is a 10.1-inch 2-in-1 device (when used with the $179 keyboard case), and even has a trackpad this time around. Similar to the Note series, the Tab's S Pen has Bluetooth now and works as a remote control, with new wand-like gesture controls that can open apps or toggle switches from a distance. The Tab S6 will be available from September 6th at $649 for the base model, which offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

It could be an answer to Apple's Arcade service.Google is testing a $5 'Play Pass' subscription for Android apps

Google is getting further into the service game. Play Pass plans to offer users "hundreds of premium apps and games" for a monthly fee, according to a report from Android Police. The idea cropped up last year after users spotted code references in Google Play. It could be similar to Apple's Arcade, but offer a selection of both apps and games (rather than just the latter) for $4.99 per month, "with no ads or in-app purchases," according to the screenshots.

The service is fully fleshed out and appears to be in the final stages of testing. Google is promising "puzzle games to premium music apps ... [with] access to hundreds of premium apps and games" -- though the emphasis appears to be on games. Some of the titles included are the $7.99 Stardew Valley, Marvel Pinball, Risk and others. A user spotted the test in the wild first, but Google confirmed to Android Police that it is indeed real.

Bad Password. Here's how AG Barr is going to get encryption 'backdoors'

If you heard the reverberation of a few thousand heads exploding last week, it was the sound of information security professionals reacting to US Attorney General Barr saying that Big Tech "can and must" put backdoors into encryption.

LightSail 2 is faring much better than its ill-fated predecessor. The Planetary Society has verified that it successfully raised its orbit using solar sailing, making it the first small spacecraft to demonstrate the concept.

Bring five friends and make sure at least one is wearing a red shirt.'Away Mission' is a free-roaming 'Star Trek' VR experience

Later this year Sandbox VR will launch the first Holodeck VR experience, where fans can enter the world of Star Trek to complete a mission involving problem-solving, combat and -- of course -- phasers. Star Trek: Discovery Away Mission will launch at its Hong Kong and San Francisco Bay area locations in the fall, with Los Angeles, New York, Austin, San Diego and Chicago to follow later in the year.

But wait, there's more...

‘Fortnite’ season 10 adds giant two-person mechs - Engadget

Fortnite

Fortnite's Season X Battle Pass is here, and it's bringing quite a few perks and toys for players. The most interesting new weapon is the B.R.U.T.E. mech suit. It's a two person vehicle, with one player controlling movement and the other firepower, though a single person can operate it if they feel they're up to the job. The Titanfall-like B.R.U.T.E. will let you do things like dash into combat, "super jump" to victory and stomp enemies, while granting access to a shotgun and missile launcher. On top of the mech, there are a number of new vaulted weapons.

As Epic teased in the story trailer, it's also reintroducing old game locations via rift zones. "The Zero Point Explosion has made the island volatile," the blog post states. "Locations once thought to be lost are beginning to appear, but they aren't the same as they once were. Drop in and explore to discover what mysterious gameplay changes they have in store." It hasn't made clear what those changes are, but you'll soon find out once you download the Battle Pass.

Another new Season X feature is Missions. Much as in PUBG, they're "a series of thematic objectives that grant rewards," Epic said. Those include Battle Stars, XP and various exclusive cosmetic items. There are no other details, but you can find more in the Battle Pass and Challenges tabs.

Finally, Fortnite has introduced Battle Pass gifting, albeit for a limited time. Until August 15th, you'll be able to send a Battle Pass to a friend on all platforms, though timing may vary a bit by region. "Your first purchase also includes a unique Gift Box for you to use when gifting items from the shop," Epic said.

On top of all that there are various Event updates, a weapon-free zone, an advanced storm controller, new camera modes, bug fixes and a performance tweak that should improve streaming speeds. If you're on a PC, keep in mind that Fortnite Season X will require a DirectX 11-capable card. Otherwise, you should be able to get it on your favorite platform now for 950 V-Bucks (about $9.50).

Android Auto Gets First Major Upgrade in Five Years - Thurrott.com

Google this week announced that it is rolling out a major update to Android Auto that deemphasizes the phone version of the app.

“If your car has Android Auto support, you’ll start to see the new design over the next few weeks,” Google’s Rod Lopez explains. “These updates will not be reflected in Android Auto for your phone screen. We will be evolving the phone screen experience from Android Auto to the Assistant’s new driving mode in the future.”

So that’s interesting, if mysterious. But the updates to Android Auto—the version you see on-screen in your car—are perhaps just as interesting. They include:

A new look and feel. Previewed back in May, Android Auto sports a new design that offers many, many improvements over its predecessor. A new navigation bar lets you easily access your favorite apps. There’s a new dark theme. And the UI adapts to the size and dimensions of your car’s display and now fills the entire screen, no matter how wide the display.

Quicker access to navigation. Now, you can configure your favorite navigation app to appear on your display when you connect Android Auto. If you already have a route loaded on your phone, it will appear in Android Auto automatically.

Better Assistant integration. Apps that provide Google Assistant support will display a small Assistant badge on their on-screen icons. You can tap those icons to hear whatever information they provide. (If you tap the Google Calendar app, for example, Assistant will tell you about your schedule.)

Pick up where you left off. Now, Android Auto will begin playing whatever audio—music, audiobook, podcast, whatever—you were listening to previously, and it will playback from where you left off. You can find a list of compatible apps on the Google Play Store.

Missed call and unread message notifications. A new notification button in the far right of the navigation bar will let you access your recent calls, messages, and alerts. You can also long-press this button, which looks like a microphone, or say “Hey Google” to have the Google Assistant help make calls, send messages and read your notifications.

Google says the new design will roll out in the next few weeks.

Google 'Play Pass' is a $5 monthly Android app subscription - Engadget

Apple's Arcade is launching this fall with an impressive slate of developers including LEGO, Annapurna Interactive, Cartoon Network and Sega. Apple is also chipping in development costs and relying on exclusive titles, which doesn't seem to be the case for Play Pass. In any case, Google could be planning to counter it by launching its service around the same time.

The services make some sense, given the popularity of subscriptions for music and movies. However, it remains to be seen if it's a good model for apps, and particularly games.
