All the changes in the first beta of iOS 13.1 - AppleInsider

Apple surprised the beta testing community on Tuesday with the first beta of iOS 13.1 rather than another beta of iOS 13. Here are all the changes we've found in this forthcoming update.

The first beta of iOS 13.1

In the past, testing of the first point update doesn't happen until the major update is released, but that isn't the case this year. It appears that several features Apple says are coming in iOS 13 aren't going to arrive until until iOS 13.1.

Several features that had been removed from iOS 13 in the beta process have been restored in the iOS 13.1 beta.

Let's dig in to see what we've found so far.

Returning features

Apple removed the Shortcuts Automation tab during the fifth beta of iOS 13 and it is once more back with iOS 13.1. This is an additional center tab within the Shortcuts app that allows users to create rules or actions for their devices. For example, we used this tab to trigger our HomeKit lights/devices by placing NFC tags throughout our home. This tab is back with iOS 13.1.

The automation tab returns to the Shortcuts app

Conversational Shortcuts returned too. This means Shortcuts that have steps such as Choose from Menu, Choose from List, Ask for Input, and Dictate Text are fully interactive within Siri with no need to launch the Shortcuts app.

Another removed feature was the ability to share an ETA while in Maps. This is back as well with some slight tweaks to the UI.

Some features are still missing, such as announcing messages through AirPods.

New features and changes

Lights, fans, and outlets all got new icons in iOS 13.1

Several new HomeKit device icons were added that we previously saw in macOS Catalina. Lights have six new options including light strips and ceiling fixtures. Plugs have new localized icons including US, European, and other global receptacles. Lastly, a tall standing floor fan was added.

Also notworthy for HomeKit users are small, subtle animations when turning on accessories. The lights slowly illuminate and glow and the light fixutre even slightly swings when enabled.

The new volume hud now shows a glyph of AirPods, HomePod, Powerbeats Pro, and other Beats headphones when connected

The volume indicator will now show a glyph of AirPods, PowerBeats Pro, HomePod, and other Beats headphones when they are connected and the volume is adjusted. The volume slider in Control Center was also tweaked and has a larger volume icon.

DualShock 4 and Xbox One controllers now have appropriate glyphs in the battery widget

The battery indicator widget has new glyphs for Xbox and PS4 controllers. Relating to battery, when invoking the Quick Actions on the Settings app icon the battery glyph now represents a full charge.

Dynamic wallpapers were updated to include the original versions and the dark versions. They are also now available on more devices.

Beta apps and those installed through Testflight now have a yellow indicator dot more prominently next to them.

In the Watch app for iPhone, "Nike+ Run Club" has been renamed "Nike Run Club." "Brightness & Text Size" was also renamed to "Display & Brightness" in the new beta.

Under Settings > General > Fonts, there is new text that will inform users they have no fonts installed and that they can download new fonts from the App Store.

Also in Settings, there is a new toggle to include reading PDFs as part of an iOS 13 reading goal.

AirDrop devices now have icons rather than the user's image

AirDrop devices have new device icons instead of just the owner's profile picture. When deleting a collection in Maps, a modal appears to confirm the deletion. The Weather widget has larger glyphs.

Personal Hotspot settings has a new Family Sharing option. Some emoji have been updated such as the puzzle piece that is now green.

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith also noted on Twitter that there are additional enhancements to mouse support. Now right-click can be mapped to the long-press/3D Touch effect of iOS.

According to the release notes,13.1 adds HEVC video encoding including alpha channels which lends itself better to green-screen style chroma key effects.

Anything else?

These are all the changes we've found so far but the list is obviously non-exhaustive. If you've found any other changes, reach out on Twitter @Andrew_OSU.

Be sure to check out all the changes from iOS 13 beta 2, in beta 3, in beta 5, beta 6, and of course beta 7.

Apple apologizes for Siri audio recordings, announces privacy changes going forward - The Verge

Apple has issued a formal apology for its privacy practices of secretly having human contractors listen to recordings of customers talking to its Siri digital assistant to improve the service. “We realize we haven’t been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologize,” Apple’s statement reads.

The company also announced several changes to Siri’s privacy policy:

First, by default, we will no longer retain audio recordings of Siri interactions. We will continue to use computer-generated transcripts to help Siri improve.

Second, users will be able to opt in to help Siri improve by learning from the audio samples of their requests. We hope that many people will choose to help Siri get better, knowing that Apple respects their data and has strong privacy controls in place. Those who choose to participate will be able to opt out at any time.

Third, when customers opt in, only Apple employees will be allowed to listen to audio samples of the Siri interactions. Our team will work to delete any recording which is determined to be an inadvertent trigger of Siri.

Apple was one of several major tech companies — including Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft — that was caught using paid human contractors to review recordings from its digital assistant, a fact that wasn’t made clear to customers. According to The Guardian’s report, those contractors had access to recordings that were full of private details, often due to accidental Siri triggers, and workers were said to each be listening to up to 1,000 recording a day.

In the aftermath of that report, Apple announced that it would suspend the grading program that would see those recordings reviewed. “We are committed to delivering a great Siri experience while protecting user privacy,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge at the time. Previously, Apple policy would keep random recordings from Siri for up to six months, after which it would remove identifying information for a copy that it would keep for two years or more.

Per today’s announcement, both the non-optional recording and the subsequent grading policies are now being suspended for good. Apple says it will no longer keep audio recordings from Siri unless a user specifically opts in. And in cases where customers do choose to give Apple their data, only Apple employees will have access (not, it would seem to imply, hired contractors). The company additionally promises that it will work to delete recordings of accidental triggers, which The Guardian’s report claims were the main source of sensitive information.

According to Apple’s statement, the company plans to resume grading Siri recordings under those new policies later this fall, following a software update that adds the new opt-in option to its devices.

How a new Google feature can help fight your Android app addiction - CNET

android-q-beta-4

You'll need to update to the latest version of Android beta to use Focus Mode.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

If you struggle with your apps sucking up too much of your time, you can outsource some self-discipline. Focus Mode is a new Android feature, announced in May, that brushes aside distracting apps -- maybe for you it's Facebook, YouTube or Instagram -- while you mentally dive into what you need to do, by applying a timer that keeps you from accessing certain apps for a set amount of time. When the time's up, Google will unpause the app.

Focus Mode is Google's latest feature intended to promote something it calls digital health. It builds off Wind Down mode, a part of Android's Digital Wellbeing feature set that turns the screen to grayscale if you schedule it to each night or manually turn it on. The idea is to make the screen less compelling to look at while also counteracting the blue light that's believed to disrupt sleep patterns and keep you awake longer.

Google believes that app timers, like those in Focus Mode, help people keep from overusing apps more than 90% of the time. You can choose which apps you'd like to pause, like Facebook and Instagram, which tend to interrupt you with notifications. But you can also keep some messaging apps open for emergencies.

It's available for the Android 10 (formerly Android Q) beta, but if you don't see it yet, you may need to update to the latest version. (Here's how to get Android 10.)

Focus Mode is located in the Digital Wellbeing app.

How to use Focus Mode for Android

1. Open your Digital Wellbeing app.

2. On the dashboard, select Focus Mode.

3. Tap on the box to the right of each app that you want to disable. You may have to select Show all apps if they're not visible.

4. Tap Turn on now.

5. You'll notice that all of your paused apps are grayed out. If you try to open the app, a box will open that says Focus Mode is on. You can either select Settings to make changes or tap OK to leave the app disabled.

6. When you're ready to stop pausing your apps, go back into the Focus Mode settings and tap Turn off now.

Now playing: Watch this: Google's Android Q has officially lost its sweet tooth

Use Quick Settings to turn Focus Mode on

1. If you're looking for a quicker way to turn Focus Mode on, open your Quick Settings menu.

2. Tap on Focus Mode. This will pause any apps you've got selected in your settings.

3. To make changes to the apps you have paused, you'll have to go into the Digital Wellbeing app.

4. That's it! Now you can concentrate on the task at hand, rather than looking down at your phone each time you get a notification.

Baidu overtakes Google in global smart speaker market - Circuit Breaker

Chinese search giant Baidu is now the world’s second biggest vendor of smart speakers, according to a new report from Canalys. The research firm says Baidu overtook Google to capture 17.3 percent of the global market with 4.5 million shipments in the second quarter of 2019, representing staggering year-on-year growth of 3,700 percent. Amazon remains the overall leader with more than 25 percent share of the market and 6.6 million shipments.

Baidu’s AI speakers run on an AI platform called DuerOS. The company initially targeted the high end of the market with the Teenage Engineering-designed Raven H speaker (above), but that product apparently sold poorly. More recently, Baidu has pushed sales of much less expensive models, with the basic Xiaodu speaker selling for as low as 89 yuan (~$12). Baidu overtook previous domestic leader Alibaba in the first quarter of this year in China, according to Canalys.

It’s worth noting, of course, that Baidu and Google aren’t direct competitors — Baidu sells its products exclusively in its home market, while Google sells its products almost everywhere but China. But Baidu’s explosive growth over the past year demonstrates the size and the dynamics of the Chinese AI ecosystem. Last year CEO Robin Li said in no uncertain terms that Baidu wouldn’t be worried by the prospect of Google re-entering China.

Google has the advantage of being able to address other countries, however, and an example of that is today’s launch of the Nest Hub (previously Google Home Hub) in India, another potentially huge market. The smart display is selling for 9,999 rupees, or about $139. Gadgets360 reports that Google is bundling Xiaomi’s Mi Security Camera with the Nest Hub as a launch promotion.

Razer Opening A Store – Razer Expanding Into Retail - Wccftech

Razer, a leading brand in lifestyle for gamers, has announced the Grand Opening of RazerStore Las Vegas (LV). This will be Razer’s largest global store to date and its second store in the U.S. after San Francisco. Razer’s retail expansion into Las Vegas will further electrify the esports and gaming scene in the city best known for sports and entertainment.

Building A Retail Presence – A Different Approach To Selling Hardware

The RazerStore LV will be located at The LINQ Promenade, 3545 S. Las Vegas Blvd. #L27, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89109. It will open to gamers and the general public on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 12 p.m. PDT. The street-level space at The LINQ Promenade provides the perfect solution for Razer to greet its game-loving guests. With nearly 22 million global visitors annually, the Promenade represents one of the busiest locations just off the Strip.

“It was totally natural for us to build our next retail presence in Las Vegas, where so many of our fans would be able to experience and enjoy our entire gaming ecosystem,” says Christine Cherel, Global Director of RazerStores. “Together with Caesars Entertainment, we have been scouting for the perfect spot for over a year – and now we have found it, right at the heart of one of the best places for entertainment in the world.”

A Potential LAN Center In The Making

RazerStore LV will serve to encourage and foster an avid gaming community. In collaboration with Razer partners and The LINQ Promenade, esports and gaming events will be organized weekly.

“The introduction of Razer to The LINQ Promenade will create an immersive destination for gamers at the heart of the Strip,” said Shaun Swanger, senior vice president of attractions, retail, and leasing for Caesars Entertainment. “With the addition of Razer, The LINQ Promenade and Las Vegas continue to thrive as the global epicenter of tourism, technology, and entertainment.”

A 2400-Square Feet Gaming Centre

The new brand gallery and retail store will cover about 2,400 square feet over two levels. The centerpiece is a massive 16-HD-panel-display wall broadcasting interactive live streams and tournaments in full surround sound to onlookers inside and outside. PC gamers can set new records playing the latest blockbuster titles on the award-winning Razer Blade gaming laptops, while console gamers can compete head-to-head in fighting games on Panthera Evo arcade sticks or Wolverine controllers. Mobile gamers can also relish in their gaming prowess on the 120-Hz display-powered Razer Phone 2.

Each floor will have different experience zones, allowing gamers to explore the full richness of the Razer ecosystem during their stay. The lower level features ten battlestations capable of hosting 5v5 gaming tournaments, as well as a Quartz Pink lair decked with the fan-favorite pink gaming gear, and Razer Chroma lighting solutions from Nanoleaf and Philips Hue. Here, gamers will also find a dedicated Chroma room to deep-dive into the next level of gaming immersion. On the upper-level mezzanine, streamers can pop into the Razer Streaming Lounge to start off an instant live stream to their fans.

Grand Opening With Big Names Coming

Opening day celebrations will include a live DJ performance, gaming competitions and attendance from major gaming influencers MissesMaeOpTic DI3SELAvaGG, and Jericho. How to stream Xbox One games on your Windows PC - The Verge

Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles and Windows 10 PCs play pretty well together. So well, in fact, that you can stream Xbox One games onto your PC.

Why would you want to do this? Perhaps because you prefer your monitor to your TV. Or maybe your Xbox One is on the other side of the house, and you just want to wirelessly stream to your PC instead of buying a 50-foot HDMI cable to physically link the two together.

There is a catch: unlike PlayStation 4’s Remote Play and PS Now, two features that let you stream from anywhere, the Xbox One console and PC need to be on the same network. Still, it’s a pretty cool trick. There are only a few simple steps that you need to get through in order to get your console’s feed sent to your PC.

Use the Xbox Console Companion app

  • If you have a Windows 10 desktop or laptop, it likely already has the Xbox Console Companion app installed. (This was formerly known as the Xbox app; Microsoft is in the process of transforming it into a more fleshed-out gaming dashboard). You can download the app from the Microsoft Store if it’s not already on your PC.
  • Open the app, then sign into your Microsoft account (which is also your Xbox account) when it prompts you to do so.
  • Once you’re signed in, click the menu button at the top left-hand side of the Xbox Console Companion app window. It will open a list of items. Click “Connection” near the bottom of that list.
  • Click “Add a device” in the top-middle section of the app window. The app will search for an Xbox One console in your network. Click “Connect” once you find your console.
  • If your console doesn’t show up, enter its IP address in the appropriate field. Your Xbox One’s IP address can be found by opening up the settings menu on the console, then clicking “Network” > “Network settings” > “Advanced Settings.”
  • After you’re connected, your console will show up under the “Now Playing” section in the Xbox Console Companion app. Click it and your PC monitor will show a direct feed from your Xbox One.

Fix lag on a wireless network

As you play on your PC, there may be some lag depending on your Wi-Fi network speeds. One way to speed up a choppy stream is to use Ethernet instead, if that’s an option. You can also use the Xbox Console Companion app to tweak the fidelity of the stream, resulting in a faster-moving picture, although at the expense of image quality.

  • To access the drop-down menu, hit the menu button on the top-right part of the display, near the full-screen button.
  • If you want to look at the granular details of the stream, like bit rate, bandwidth use, and more, click the button that appears near the bottom left part of the screen.

I don’t use the Xbox Console Companion app on my PC too often, but it comes in handy when I want to play Xbox at the same time that others prefer to watch something else on the TV. It’s particularly useful for slow-paced games where the speed of your inputs doesn’t come into play, but I found it to be sufficient for games like Asura’s Wrath, which relies on quickly completing events to make progress.
