Samsung's Android 10 beta program is now available on the Galaxy S10 - Engadget

Android 10 was released in September, but so far, it's only been available on Google's own Pixel devices. Usually, it takes other manufacturers some months to catch up, however, as promised, Samsung has released a beta of its Android 10-based One UI 2.0 for Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10e devices. The program is now rolling out in South Korea, Germany, and the US, according to SamMobile.

The One UI 2.0 OS features a blend of Samsung's features like smaller notifications and "enhanced Dark Mode" that adjusts the brightness of images and text at night, along with Android 10 perks like the new Focus Mode.

The app is supposedly available for folks with an unlocked phone or a contract with Sprint or T-Mobile. To find out if you have access, head to the Samsung Members app and check for notifications. If you manage to get it, you'll be far ahead of Galaxy S9 owners who wanted Android 9 "Pie" last year. That app didn't hit beta on Samsung devices until November 2018, four months after it was released.

Apple’s iPhone SE 2 will start at $399, Ming-Chi Kuo predicts - Circuit Breaker

In a new research report, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that prices for the rumored iPhone SE 2 will start at $399, MacRumors reports. Alongside the new pricing information, Kuo also used the report to re-iterate several of his previous predictions for the device, including that it will be powered by the iPhone 11’s A13 chip, will have 3GB of RAM, and will be released in the first quarter of next year.

Kuo also says that the new phone will be available with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage (although a report from earlier this year said it would only have 128GB), and will come in gray, silver, or red. He also said that the phone won’t include 3D Touch, although that’s less surprising given the feature has recently disappeared from Apple’s top-end devices. The analyst has previously said he expects the iPhone SE 2’s design to be similar to that of the iPhone 8, echoing a previous report from Bloomberg.

As 9to5Mac notes, a $399 starting price is exactly the same as what the original iPhone SE had when it launched way back in 2016, although it dropped to $349 by the time it was discontinued the following year. Selling cheaper devices like the SE is particularly important for Apple if it wants to compete on unit sales in markets like India, where phones costing more than around $450 only made up 4 percent of the market as of last year. The cheapest phone Apple currently sells is the iPhone 8, which starts at $449.

NVIDIA will remaster more games with RTX ray tracing - Engadget

Sponsored Links

id Software/Lightspeed Studios/NVIDIA

Quake II RTX is far from the last game to receive an NVIDIA ray tracing upgrade. DSOG has discovered that NVIDIA is hiring a producer for its Lightspeed Studios unit to lead work on a "game remastering program" that will add RTX ray tracing to more classic titles. The GPU maker is unsurprisingly shy about just which games are in the pipeline. The next project is a game "you know and love" -- not a real clue, but promising nonetheless.

Lightspeed worked on the Quake II RTX remaster and was also responsible for bringing numerous games to Android through NVIDIA's Shield devices, including Half-Life 2 and even a China-only port of Super Mario Galaxy.

It's not surprising that NVIDIA would plan more frequent ray tracing updates. The company can use them to sell more GeForce RTX graphics cards without waiting for third-party developers to put in all the work. It's just a matter of which games make the most sense. Quake II was a prime candidate given that its lighting effects were a selling point when the game was new, and NVIDIA will likely be looking for similar technology showcases that could stand some modern-day polish.

Devolver Boss Excited By PS5 And Scarlett, But Struggles To See The Difference From This Gen - GameSpot

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

One of the founders of Devolver Digital, the boutique publisher behind games like Hotline Miami and Genital Jousting, is eager to see Sony and Microsoft launch their next-generation platforms. Speaking to GameSpot at PAX Australia, Graeme Struthers said he's excited about the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Project Scarlett in 2020 in part because those systems are expected to be attractive to all developers big and small.

This wasn't always the case, as Struthers--who has been with the company since he co-founded it in 2009---pointed out that the PS3/Xbox 360 generation wasn't the most inviting for indie developers.

"It's great," Struthers said of the upcoming release of the PS5 and next Xbox. "The previous generation, the one we're coming to the end of, was the one for companies like ourselves--we were allowed in. Previously it was pretty hard to be on PS3 and Xbox 360. For next-gen, we're in at the start. given the same opportunities as anybody else, which is great."

While Struthers is indeed excited about the potential for the PS5 and next Xbox to grow the gaming category overall, the executive observed that the new consoles seem to be more iterative in nature instead of dramatically different or improved versions of their predecessors.

"I think it is ever harder to tell the differences [between new consoles] but it's also cool that they're both coming in with a new generation [of consoles] because it means they are going to invest more money in this space, which will create more users," he said. "It's good for everyone. And to have Nintendo in such good, vibrant health as well, you've got three console platforms and Apple Arcade to mull over and Steam and Epic."

Devolver releases some of its games on consoles, but the company has always been and continues to be a PC-first and PC-focused publisher.

Struthers isn't the first gaming industry executive to speak in this way about the next generation of consoles. Atsushi Inaba, the head of Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, said in an earlier interview that the PS5 and Project Scarlett are "more of the same."

Sony just recently officially confirmed that its new console will be called the PlayStation 5. The company also began to discuss its plans for a next-generation controller.

Microsoft, on the other hand, hasn't shared much about its new Xbox. The console continues to be known only as Project Scarlett. What we do know, however, is that it will work with any Xbox One and Xbox One controllers you may already own, while the backwards compatibility support also extends to Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games. Microsoft will release Halo Infinite as a launch title for the new console.

One of Devolver's biggest upcoming releases is the wacky, weird, and wonderful-looking sorta-battle royale game Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout for PC and PS4 that's due to launch in 2020.

GameSpot's conversation with Struthers spanned numerous other topics, including secrecy in the video game industry, why subscription plans like Apple Arcade, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and others might hurt independent games, censorship in Australia, the origins of Devolver's absurd E3 press conferences, and more. GameSpot will publish more from the interview in the time ahead, so keep checking back for more.
