Snapchat launches another aging AR lens to lure people back to the app - The Verge

Snapchat’s latest plan for a viral augmented reality filter takes users on an aging journey where they can use a slider to begin morphing from a toddler up to an elderly person. It mashes the success the company had with its original baby lens in May this year with an aging filter, along the lines of FaceApp’s filter, allowing users to rapidly age themselves. The lens is rolling out globally starting today and will be available from users’ lens carousel at the bottom of their camera interface. Although Snap does pay creators to build AR lenses for its platform, this lens is a Snap original, meaning an internal team built it. Seemingly, it’s primed to go viral both on and off the platform.

When Snap’s baby filter went viral this past spring, it popped up repeatedly on other platforms, like Instagram. Still, the company said in its 2019 second quarter earnings call that 7 to 9 million of its most recently added users came to the platform because of its AR filters, including its viral gender swap one. It’s easy to imagine the company wants another viral success to boost that number again.

Although Snap would probably like people to post within Snapchat, it’s not a terrible loss for them to solely have people come to the app for its AR technology — no one is doing that for Instagram. Instagram’s filters are mostly focused on making people look hotter or helping them express emotion, not performing wacky tricks. Even Snap’s commercial for the filter, which I’ve embedded above, seemingly gives people ideas for how to use the filter as a TikTok meme, syncing the lens to music for comic effect. To me, it suggests a tacit acknowledgment that people are using Snap lenses outside the app, and that’s okay.

Google’s Duplex can now book cinema tickets in the UK and US - The Verge

You can now use Google Duplex to book cinema tickets on the web on Android in the UK and US. The functionality, which was first teased back at Google I/O 2019, can be accessed through Google Assistant or the Google app on Android. You can ask or search for cinema listings, and once you’ve found a suitable time and location you tap the “Buy tickets” button to start the process. Then the software takes you through the steps of picking seats, and can enter your payment information for you if you have it saved in Chrome.

The new feature builds on Duplex’s existing restaurant-booking functionality, which Google started offering last year. However, in this case it’s going through the more simple process of filling out text fields on a website, rather than attempting to use a voice assistant to place a phone call to an unsuspecting business.

Google says its movie ticket-booking service is compatible with over 70 cinemas and ticketing services, including AMC, Fandango, MJR Theaters, and Movietickets.com in the US, and it’ll also work with Odeon cinemas in the UK.

I’ve just tried out the functionality for myself to see how it works, and the whole process felt very seamless, even when it has to rely on a cinema’s own interface to have you pick your seats. Overall though, considering how clunky some cinema’s websites can be, it’s a very welcome feature.

Google officially rolls out Duplex-powered Assistant for booking movie tickets on Android - Android Police

After months of teasing and weeks of testing, Google is officially bringing its Duplex artificial intelligence guidance to users booking movie tickets online through Assistant. Just ask Assistant or search on Google through your Android phone to check out show times for movies and then have Assistant automate most of the reservation process from filling form fields to breezing through payments.

Duplex-assisted online bookings, first revealed back at I/O, are available on more than 70 theater and ticket agent websites, featuring partners such as AMC, Fandango, and MJR in the United States and Odeon in the United Kingdom.

The service uses the data you've saved in Google Chrome to pre-fill personal information where it's needed and analyzes screens to either deliver its own prompts that are easy to respond to or let you interact with the website itself for a brief section. You'll then buy your tickets with a card or another funding source you've linked to Google Pay.

We tested the booking process in late September and found some clues linking it back to Duplex. We've since gotten at least one more report saying that they could have had this as early as July.

This feature is currently only available on Android phones through Assistant or Chrome. Google says it expects to deploy Duplex to booking car rentals online in the near future.

Duplex was first deployed last year to automate restaurant and other appointment reservations by phone.

Save time on buying movie tickets with the Google Assistant on Chrome
By Dan Ritter, Product Manager

You can already use the Google Assistant to book restaurant reservations over the phone using Duplex, and now, we’re extending that technology to complete tasks online, like buying movie tickets.

With the Google Assistant, you can now use your Android phone to quickly and easily purchase movie tickets on the Web, especially as you start thinking about fun activities for the family ahead of the holidays. Ask the Assistant something like, “Hey Google, showtimes for [movie] in Phoenix this weekend”. Or, you can do a search for movie times from the Google app on Android.

After selecting a theater and time that works best for you, you’ll have the option to “Buy-tickets” with the Assistant from more than 70 cinemas and ticketing services of your choice, such as AMC, Fandango, MJR Theaters, and Movietickets.com in the US, or Odeon in the UK. From there, the Assistant opens in Chrome to guide you through purchasing your ticket. Thanks to Duplex on the Web technology, the Assistant will be able to navigate the site and input your information, like payment information saved in Chrome.

This is just the first step on how we’re making it easier to get things done with the Assistant on the Web from your phone. We’ll be expanding this feature to other complex tasks like booking a car rental.

'Diablo IV' team reveals early thoughts on dungeons, level caps - Engadget

Blizzard

Blizzard only just announced Diablo IV a couple of weeks ago, but it's already provided some key updates on the game's development. In an attempt to repair a fractured relationship with the community that dates back further than the last few months of controversy -- remember the Diablo Immortal reveal last year? -- a recent update is exposing some of the developer's thoughts on system design. That's crucial for a loot-focused experience like Diablo so players feel both challenged and rewarded for their efforts, so explaining ahead of time how skill trees, items and progressions will work and getting some feedback is a good idea.

One interesting aspect is that Lead Systems Designer David Kim says the team is considering the choice between an infinite or finite leveling and experience system. One version he discussed has a level cap that gives way to a second experience system for players who want to go further into the game, acknowledging that while some people want a feeling of completion, others could go on indefinitely in pursuit of higher ranks.

A demo at BlizzCon 2019 featured locked "skill slots" in its UI, but apparently skill selection will remain open in the final game. Also, they're "revisiting" the inclusion of ancient items after feedback from players.

Whatever the team decides, fans of the series can expect to hear more in February. While the game doesn't have a release date yet, the plan is to provide quarterly behind-the-scenes updates on its development, and that's when we'll get the first one.

Google Stadia available now — soon we'll know if it can handle the influx of gamers (Update: Access codes not arriving on time) - Android Police

Having its humble beginnings concealed under the guise of Project Stream, Google has been working on its game streaming service for quite some time, leading up to the official announcement of Stadia earlier this year. Despite initial praise, mounting setbacks, and even fears that the service may cave before reaching success, Stadia is finally ready for prime time. Starting today, gamers can purchase and play any of the 22 launch titles on Google's new cloud gaming service.

To play games on Stadia, you need to have previously purchased a Stadia Founder's Edition, or you can currently purchase the Stadia Premiere Edition for $129 on the Google Store. The free Base version of Stadia that would allow gamers to purchase and stream content at 1080p without a recurring subscription isn't expected to launch until sometime in 2020.

We were lucky enough to get our paws on Stadia just a little bit early. In our official review, we were impressed by its performance and platform potential, though we were miffed by the paltry launch game lineup, missing features, and Google's inescapable penchant for killing off projects before they've fully matured. Still, if you're thinking about picking up a Stadia Premiere package, you might want to wait for this Black Friday deal on a Stadia Premiere + Nest Wi-Fi bundle. Stadia is currently available to gamers in 14 different territories, including the US, UK, and Canada.

Some Founders codes have not been sent out in the correct order

Google's Stadia rollout has been anything but smooth sailing, and now it's come to light that access codes haven't been sent out to some players in time for the arrival of their Founder's Edition hardware. Early adopters were promised they'd receive their codes on a first come first served basis so they could shotgun a Stadia username, but Google has had to admit that it messed up — a company representative took to Reddit to respond to disgruntled customers...

We're sorry for the delayed responses. We've identified an issue where a small fraction of Stadia access codes were sent out of order. That has been addressed. We've continued to roll out codes in the sequence in which we received your pre-order. We look forward to seeing you on Stadia.

With plenty of bad publicity so far, Google will hope that its servers can handle the load as more users gain access to the service. My Founder's Edition kit is apparently due to arrive today, although I didn't order it until September 18, so I hope for the sake of those who ordered before me and haven't yet got theirs that it's incorrect.

Xbox One update helps you buy the games your friends are playing - Engadget

Sponsored Links

Devindra Hardawar/Engadget

It could soon be all too easy to cave into peer pressure if you're an Xbox One owner. Microsoft is trotting out a Guide update that not only lets you obtain more info about the games your friends are playing, but buy them, install them or play them. It can even take you to the game's official club if you're interested more than just purchasing. You just have to select a friend's profile to glean more details.

The company's Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) would only say that the feature will reach your system "soon," so don't be shocked if it isn't there right away. Yes, this is clearly a bid to spur more game purchases -- it's banking on that fear of missing out when your friends are playing that hot new shooter. It could be genuinely practical if you've been invited to join a game, though, and it might also come in handy if you're unsure of what to play.
