These sporty headphones aren't "true wireless" -- there's a cable connecting the left and right earbud that wraps around the back of your neck. But they are fully waterproof, and they're half off right now. Read our Jaybird Tarah review.

Chris Monroe/CNET

Google's Home Minis have become recent Black Friday staples, and those looking to add the Google Assistant to their home (or give some to friends or colleagues) can find even more deals. Already discounting a single Home Mini to $25 (from $49), Walmart is offering a two-pack of Google's small smart speakers for $38. Those looking to save a few more bucks, however, should wait until Black Friday to get a single Home Mini (plus $5 in Vudu credit) for $19 a pop at Walmart.

Amazon

We know that the Echo Dot with Clock will drop to $35 later this week (see below), and that Amazon is making its own smart plug available with most smart speaker orders as a $5 add-on. But for just $5 more right now, you can score this combo deal. Read our Amazon Dot with Clock review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

UE's Wonderboom is a compact, fully waterproof Bluetooth speaker that plays very loud with a good amount of bass for its small size. While a few years old, it is still a quality speaker that is now even cheaper than its usual rate that often ranges between $60 and $100. Read the UE Wonderboom review.

Amazon

Like the Google Home Mini and Chromecast, Amazon's Fire TV Stick and Echo Dot have similarly become Black Friday regulars. While deals on both will appear by Black Friday proper, those looking for a headstart on shopping will find a pre-Black Friday bundle of the Fire TV 4K Stick and a third-gen Echo Dot for $47 right now with promo code ECHO4K.

The Fire TV Stick will drop to $20 on Nov. 24, and the Echo Dot will drop to $22 on Nov. 28, but this deal includes the more powerful 4K version of the Fire TV Stick.

This is the Goldilocks tablet in Amazon's line -- it's fast, it has an HD display and plenty of storage space. It also has up to 10 hours of battery life, which is essential in this day and age. And did we mention that the price is very right? See our Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet review.

Walmart

Looking for a movie night? You can currently snag a Google Smart TV Kit for $38 at Walmart. The deal includes a Google Home Mini, Chromecast and $10 in credit for the Vudu video store for $38 in a "smart TV kit."

Patrick Holland/CNET

Looking to get a new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 controller? Black Friday is usually one of the best times to buy. Best Buy and Walmart have already the price of each console's respective controllers by $20, bringing the starting price down to $40 as opposed to its usual $60. And thanks to the latest iOS update, both controllers now work with iPhones and iPads for playing games on the go.

eBay

This Star Wars-themed drone comes with real lasers and an app for Android or iOS. The drone offers multiple speeds and a multiplayer battle game, so up to 12 people can battle simultaneously.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Those looking for a deal on Roku's 4K Ultra streaming box will find one at Walmart. The retail giant is knocking $51 off the price of the streamer to bring it down to $48 on Black Friday. And it is even throwing in $5 in Vudu credit and JBL headphones to sweeten the deal.

Tyler Lizenby/CNET

Looking for a deal on Amazon's Echo Show 5? Best Buy is taking $40 off on Black Friday. The Show 5 features a 5.5-inch display and video camera for calls in addition to being a speaker for playing music and doing other traditional Alexa tasks.

Amazon

Amazon's most popular smart speaker will soon be available with a nifty LED display. The new Echo Dot will officially be in stock on December 4, but deals start early on Black Friday. You can use this versatile smart speaker to play music, set alarms, check the weather and, of course, ask Alexa for help. The LED can show the time, outdoor temperature or timers. Read our review of the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock.

Black Friday 2019: The best Apple iPad deal for you - CNET

03-ipad-2019-10-2

Picking an iPad this year may feel crazy, but there's a logic to it.

Sarah Tew/CNET
This story is part of Black Friday 2019, our roundup of the best deals on today's tech.

Among Apple products, there's one that's always a headliner for deep discounts: the iPad. Apple's tablet line has gotten larger and more confusing every single year, but there's good news for any potential iPad shopper this Black Friday. All of the options are amazing, and iPad discounts are many. It's just a matter of how much you'd like to pay.

Unlike last year, Apple hasn't released a new version of the top-end iPad Pro. But the recent 10.2-inch budget-line iPad is better than ever. Or should you get the Mini? Or, the iPad Air?

Let's dive in. (By the way, here's the proper etiquette for buying tech gifts in general, and here's what to consider when buying smart home gifts.)

42-ipad-2019-10-2

The 10.2-inch iPad is totally fine.

Sarah Tew/CNET

iPad 10.2-inch (2019): The best for most

The 10.2-inch model is CNET's Editors' Choice for a reason: Even though it has an older A10 processor, it works perfectly well with the latest iPadOS, has a slightly bigger screen, supports the Apple Pencil, and now works with Apple's older Smart Connector keyboard accessories. It's already on sale, too. I'd consider the 128GB model, though, over the 32GB, especially if you're planning on downloading movies. The ideal size I would have recommended would have been 64GB... which, of course, Apple doesn't sell.

There are several sales on this model, and probably more to come. Amazon is offering about $49 off both storage sizes of the iPad, plus an extra $30 with "no rush shipping," meaning either $280 or $250 for the 32GB version. (I'd recommend the 128GB version, though).

Best Buy is offering the iPad for $250, but you need to sign up for a free Best Buy reward program membership.

iPad (2018): Almost the same as the 10.2-inch iPad

You could save even more by getting last year's model of the entry-level iPad, which has the same A10 processor (and also supports Apple Pencil). Amazon is selling the LTE, 128GB version for $429 ($130 off), which is the most affordable way to an LTE iPad...but do you really need LTE? (I'd say no.)

01-ipad-2019-10-2

The iPad Air (left) versus the 10.2-inch iPad (right). The Air has better specs and a slightly thinner body.

Sarah Tew/CNET

iPad Air (2019): Step up from basic

The difference between the entry-level 10.2-inch iPad and the iPad Air released this year is basically a better A12 processor, and a slightly bigger screen (10.5 inches). It's also a bit thinner. Anyone who wants a bit more graphics oomph for photo or video work could consider this a way to split the difference between the basic iPad and the iPad Pro. You'll find it for $469, a discount of $30, at B&H electronics.

The 2017 iPad Pro is like the 2019 iPad Air, with a couple of extras

Save yourself the headache and know that the 2019 10.5-inch iPad Air is a slightly more budget version of the 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The Pro from 2017 has a faster-scrolling 120Hz display, better quad speakers and slightly different cameras. If you can somehow get it for less than the Air above, it's well worth it! The 2017 iPad Pro's on sale below, but at a higher cost than the iPad Air.

011-ipad-pro-2018

Note: Pencil and keyboard case sold separately.

Sarah Tew/CNET

iPad Pro (2018): The fanciest option, but...

For the right price, last year's iPad Pro is still a great pick. Its A12X processor is extremely powerful, it has Face ID (which is great on an iPad), supports newer Pencil accessories that stick to the side to charge, its optional keyboard case is great (and expensive), and it supports USB-C. Amazon has the 11-inch 64GB Pro for $120 off, but even then it's still $674. (Other storage sizes are available at less impressive discounts.)

ipad-mini-2019-10

The iPad Mini's smaller size and upgraded specs are unique.

Angela Lang/CNET

iPad Mini (2019): Not a bad travel proposition

The smaller 7.9-inch iPad was upgraded this year with an A12 processor and Pencil support, and it's a great smaller tablet. It's normally too expensive to justify over the entry iPad, but Black Friday sale deals could make it a tempting travel gadget. It's not so great for typing, though, and the $15 off deal below isn't very much off the regular price.

Consider at least 64GB of storage

Some of the basic iPads start with just 32GB, which doesn't cut it. Some models start with 64GB, which is acceptable. If you're downloading movies for trips or plan on putting lots of games onboard, consider 128GB. I wouldn't consider 256GB and up unless you're a video editor.

For kids, Fire tablets or Chromebooks are worth considering

Amazon's always-crazy-low tablet sales on Fire tablets are tempting if you have Amazon Prime or live in Amazon's ecosystem. As ultra-budget tablets for videos and games, they're totally fine.

Chromebooks are excellent choices as secure kid-friendly laptop alternatives, or for anyone who might want a laptop-type browser without a full computer price.

iPad at any price?

If you're treating yourself, last year's iPad Pro is a stellar laptop alternative, provided you can live in Apple's controlled iOS world (iPadOS, the name of the iPad-focused iOS 13 update this year, does have a far better browser, improved Pencil support and file access). Apple might update the iPad Pro as early as spring next year, though, so maybe you should also consider getting an IOU.

Cellular? Skip

The extra $129 for an LTE antenna (and the cost per month of a cellular plan on the iPad) aren't worth it, unless you're dying to use LTE on a tablet or have someone who's footing the bill. Tether with your phone instead.

Save some money for dongles and Pencils and things

Your purchase, sadly, doesn't end with just the iPad. You'll want a case for that delicate tablet, and probably one of Apple's Pencil styluses (the old one for most iPads, and the new one for the 2018 iPad Pro). A keyboard case is useful, and costs extra too. If you get the USB-C iPad Pro, you're also going to want a few dongles (like one for a headphone jack).

Alexa is about to be very disappointed - TechCrunch

A general lack of judgement has always been one of the strongest appeals of smart assistants. Whatever bad pop song or terrible online video you play for the 10,000th time — they don’t care. They’re simply there to help, judgement free.

Amazon, however, has been working on some features behind the scenes to help make Alexa more lifelike. Those involve bringing more emotional resonance to the smart assistant — namely the ability to make it voice sound varying levels of excited and disappointed.

“Alexa emotions” feature three levels of intensity. For the full effect, here’s “I just listened to the Smiths and then Googled what Morrissey has been up to lately” mode:

We all get down around the holidays, Alexa. Are you sure there’s nothing you want to talk about here? Amazon says users are feeling the newly empathetic assistant. “ Early customer feedback indicates that overall satisfaction with the voice experience increased by 30% when Alexa responded with emotions,” it writes in a post.

The feature is available to developers starting today, primarily focused on gaming skills. That means they’ll probably start rolling out to applications in the near future. No word on whether it’s possible to set those flash news briefings to perpetual disappointment.

The company is also rolling out a content-tailored delivery, design to give Alexa a style more akin to a news anchor or radio host.

Black Friday 2019: Best phone deals for Pixel 4, Samsung Galaxy S10 and iPhone - CNET

This story is part of Holiday Gift Guide 2019, your source for the season's best gifts and deals, hand-picked by the experts at CNET.

Black Friday is only a few days away and the deals have started early. With a host of deals on phones already starting to pop up, here's a breakdown on where some of the best deals lie for iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, Google Pixel phones and more.

If you're switching carriers or adding a new line, most have deals in place to get you a free new iPhone or Galaxy if you trade in your current phone (some even have "buy one, get one" deals). But most of these carriers offer these deals year-round, so for this list, we're going to keep the focus on upgrades and unlocked discounts.

We'll keep updating this list as more prices are slashed and ads are released from the carriers and retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart. For even more online shopping deals, see our roundup of the best deals under $30 and best deals for $100 and under. If you're a big spender, we also compiled a roundup of the best Black Friday deals under $250. Happy shopping!

As always, all the prices here are accurate at the time of publication but are subject to change.

Black Friday iPhone deals

Angela Lang/CNET

If you're not sold on getting a new iPhone 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max and are good with getting last year's still-impressive iPhones, Walmart has a pretty tempting offer. While it isn't discounting the iPhones' list price, it is offering a $450 virtual gift card with the purchase of an XS and a $400 gift card if you buy an XS Max or iPhone XR.

You don't need to trade in your old phone to get the offer, but if you do you can save up to another $250 depending on the phone and condition (an iPhone 8 Plus 256GB or newer will get $250). The trade-in will need to be done in stores, which will offer a similar discount and offer the deal between Nov. 28 and Dec. 1 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Sprint users will also be able to do this deal in stores.

The online portion of the deal runs from 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 27, through 6 p.m. ET on Thanksgiving, Nov. 28 and then again Sunday, Dec. 1 at midnight E.T through 2:59 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Note: You will need to purchase the phone on a carrier payment plan.  Read our iPhone XS review.

Angela Lang/CNET

Walmart is doing a similar, smaller deal for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. While it is not offering the same amount for the latest iPhones, $300 is still a solid offer especially considering you don't have to trade in your phone or switch to a new provider.

The deal for the latest iPhones follows the same times and restrictions as the XS and XS Max. If you want to do a trade-in, you'll need to head into a Walmart store between Nov. 28 and Dec. 1.

AT&T and Verizon users can do this deal online or in stores. Sprint users will also be able to do this deal, but need to go into stores.  Read our iPhone 11 review.

Angela Lang/CNET

Best Buy's iPhone 11 deal is great if you're looking to upgrade from a recent phone like the iPhone X, XR or XS. The retailer is offering up to $500 off if you're trading in one of those devices in good, working condition and buying an iPhone 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max. You'll need to be on AT&T, Verizon or Sprint and purchase the new device on your carrier's installment plan, but it's a nice discount nonetheless.

Older phones will get a discount, but it won't be as substantial. Regardless you will need to go into a physical Best Buy store to get the deal. The deal runs now through Cyber Monday.

Unlike other deals, the discount will not be given on a gift card. Instead, your monthly payment will go down to reflect the updated pricing. Read our iPhone 11 review.

Target is offering a $200 discount if you upgrade to a new iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS or XS Max. No trade-in is needed, but you do need to buy on your carrier's payment plan. While not as hefty as the Best Buy or Walmart deal, those with Target RedCard credit card will be able to stack this with the 5% cash back that card offers for a little extra savings.

The deal runs from 7 a.m. local time on Black Friday through Sunday, Dec. 1. Read our iPhone 11 Pro Max review.

Black Friday Android deals

Angela Lang/CNET

Like with the iPhones, Best Buy has some aggressive offers for those looking to upgrade their Galaxy phones offering between $400 and $500 off on the latest Galaxy phones, so long as you upgrade on an AT&T, Verizon or Sprint installment plan. If you're willing to trade in your older phone you could knock off another $250.

The deal requires you to head to a Best Buy store and the actual trade-in discount will vary depending on the phone you're trading in. The deal also extends to the Galaxy S10 Plus 5G on Verizon and Sprint as well the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G on Verizon.

Unlike other deals, the discount will not be given on a gift card. Instead, your monthly payment will go down to reflect the updated pricing.

The deal runs now through Cyber Monday (Dec. 2). Read our Galaxy Note 10 Plus review.

Juan Garzon / CNET

Like Best Buy, Walmart will have strong Galaxy deals, including offering a $450 virtual gift card with the purchase of a Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, S10 5G (on Verizon), Note 10 and Note 10 Plus on an AT&T, Sprint or Verizon installment plan.

Those looking for an S10E or Note 9 will get a $300 eGift card, whereas those heading into a store to trade in can get up $700 in gift cards depending on which phone you're upgrading from.

The deal starts online at 10 p.m. PT on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 27, and runs through 6 p.m. ET on Black Friday before returning at 3 a.m. ET on Cyber Monday and running until 2:59 a.m. ET on Tuesday Dec. 2.

Local stores will do something similar, but you'll want to check the hours and stock before heading in. Verizon and AT&T users can upgrade online, but Sprint users will need to do the whole process in stores. Read our Galaxy Note 10 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Looking for a new Pixel? Target's deal will get you a $300 gift card if you buy a Pixel 4 or 4 XL on an AT&T or Verizon installment plan. No trade-in is required, but you do need to go to a physical store.

The deal starts Thanksgiving night at 5 p.m. local time and runs through Sunday, Dec. 1. Read our Google Pixel 4 review.

Angela Lang/CNET

Google's older Pixel 3 lacks some of the bells and whistles of the new Pixel 4 line, but it does still have an excellent camera and runs the latest version of Android. Target's deal will get you a $550 gift card if you buy a Pixel 3 or 3 XL on an AT&T or Verizon installment plan.

No trade-in is required, but you do need to go to a physical store. The deal starts at 5 p.m. local time on Thanksgiving and runs until Sunday, Dec. 1.  Read our Google Pixel 3 XL review.

Don't want to lock yourself into a monthly payment plan? Best Buy is knocking off $200 on the price of an unlocked Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10 Plus. While not as hefty a discount, the fact that you don't need to trade-in or commit to a carrier is a perk. Read our Galaxy Note 10 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If you're looking for an unlocked Pixel 4, you can save $200 on the 4 or larger 4 XL at Amazon or Google's Store. Both stores are selling the phones unlocked, which means it should work on all four major carriers. If you have an Amazon Prime credit card, however, you can save a little more, thanks to the 5% cash back that it offers.  Read our Google Pixel 4 review.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

Amazon is offering free Galaxy Buds with a purchase of the Galaxy S10 or S10 Plus. Both phones are sold unlocked, with the addition of the wireless earbuds making for a savings of $117 on either device.

Those looking to trade in a phone and get a deal with the free earbuds should head to Samsung, which can help knock a few hundred dollars more off the price, depending on the device you're trading in. Samsung's deal of free earbuds also applies to the S10 5G, Note 10, Note 10 Plus and Note 10 Plus 5G. Read our Galaxy S10 review.

Angela Lang/CNET

The OnePlus 7 Pro was one of 2019's most impressive phones when it launched earlier this year, and it will get even cheaper on Black Friday. OnePlus is taking $150 off of its unlocked 7 Pro. While not as powerful as the 7T, it still features a Qualcomm 855 processor, runs Android 10 and has 8GB of RAM with 256GB of storage. Available unlocked, the phone will work with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile's 4G LTE networks.

Those looking to save little more can also trade in their phone to OnePlus. The deal is available now. Read our OnePlus 7 Pro review.
