Motorola’s new One Hyper has a pop-up camera, Android 10, and a $400 price tag - Circuit Breaker

Motorola has been experimenting the last few years with its One line of phones, which look to blur the line between midrange and high-end smartphones. The latest attempt is the Motorola One Hyper, which is essentially a budget version of a OnePlus 7 Pro.

Like the 7 Pro, Motorola is using a pop-up selfie camera to give the front of the device a completely screen-filled look with no notches (although there is still a bit of a bezel chin on the bottom). The net result is a 6.5-inch, 2340 x 1080 display that has a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, which, if nothing else, looks great in the renders that Motorola has released.

There’s also the headlining spec that gives the phone its name: 45W USB-C “hyper charging” that’s among the fastest supported charging speeds we’ve seen yet on a smartphone. (The budget One Hyper actually beats the 30W charging OnePlus 7 Pro here.)

Unfortunately, the rest of the specs are par for the course for a midrange Android phone: 128GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 675 processor. The bright spot is the 4,000mAh battery, which, when combined with the weaker processor, should lead to some better-than-average battery life. Motorola promises 38 hours of continuous use from a charge. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is always nice to see. On the software side, the Motorola One Hyper ships with Android 10, which is especially welcome on a midrange device like this.

The cameras are also fairly standard for a midrange phone. The One Hyper offers two rear cameras: a 64-megapixel main lens, which captures quad-pixel 16-megapixel stills, and an 8-megapixel 118-degree ultra-wide lens. The One Hyper also supports Motorola’s usual suite of camera software, including the company’s AI-powered night mode and shot optimization features. The pop-up selfie camera is a 32-megapixel lens (effectively taking quad-pixel 8-megapixel stills).

Compared to the 7 Pro’s $699 price tag, the One Hyper doesn’t look like a bad phone for the $399 price. But Motorola is launching the One Hyper in the middle of holiday sale season when the high-end 7 Pro is on sale for $549 (just $150 more than the One Hyper) — to say nothing of the various sales on other great Android phones like the Galaxy S10 — so the $399 One Hyper is a tougher sell.

The One Hyper marks the third Motorola One-branded phone that the company has released in the last few months, along with the Motorola One Zoom (which offered a four-camera system) and the Motorola One Action (which tried to build a GoPro-style action camera into a phone). The One Hyper looks nice, but it follows the trend of having a singular gimmick, which makes me wonder what kind of device Motorola could make if it focused all its innovations on a single great phone instead of splitting them into a trio of merely good ones.

The Motorola One Hyper will be available in the US starting on December 4th. It’ll be sold exclusively on Motorola.com as a GSM unlocked device.

Google's Live Captions come to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3A - Engadget

Sponsored Links

Google

Google has rolled out Live Caption to the Pixel 3 and the 3a like it promised back in October. The tech giant debuted the feature, which enables captions for all audio in real-time on your device, at I/O in May. It first landed on the Pixel 4, but now it's also out for the phone's older and more affordable siblings.

Live Caption gives you a way to add captions to content like videos and podcasts, as well as audio messages -- it doesn't, however, work on audio and video calls -- without the need for WiFi or data. You can position the captions anywhere on screen and even expand the box if you don't mind it taking up more of your display. When the feature launched, Google said it was developed with help from members of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities, who served as testers before its release. It currently supports English, but Google plans to add support for more languages in the future.

Pixel 3, Pixel 3a bug causes Pixel Launcher to constantly crash - Android Authority

Pixel 3 XL vs Pixel 3a XL showing front of the phone

The December 2019 update has landed on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a devices this week, bringing a variety of fixes as well as Live Caption support. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s also brought a rather nasty bug.

According to users on the GooglePixel subreddit (h/t: Android Police), the December 2019 update has apparently caused the Pixel Launcher to constantly crash. This Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a bug renders the phone virtually unusable as the crash dialog appears on-screen all the time.

The problem seems to affect some users who installed the update and have gesture navigation enabled, as well as some people with the Pixel 4 launcher.

Editor's Pick

Redditors report that uninstalling the Pixel Launcher on the Play Store, using ADB commands to revert to an old version, or visiting app information and then uninstalling the update works for them. But some have also resorted to a hard-reset to get things working again.

Have you encountered this Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a bug? Let us know what fix worked for you! Hopefully the Pixel 4 series doesn’t have this problem when the December 2019 update lands next week.

Here are all the brands confirmed to offer Snapdragon 865, 765 phones - Android Authority

Snapdragon 865 phones are coming from Q1 2020.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765/765G chipsets yesterday, confirming 5G connectivity and a few more details ahead of the full rundown later today.

The Snapdragon 865 and 765 series are expected to power 2020’s flagship and upper mid-range phones respectively. But the 5G support also suggests that we can expect a flood of 5G devices next year, and several brands have already confirmed that they’ll offer these chips in their phones.

HMD

A Nokia phone with the Snapdragon 765 is coming.Qualcomm

HMD has confirmed in a Qualcomm press release and on-stage that it’ll offer a Nokia smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 765 next year. It didn’t mention plans for a Snapdragon 865 phone though.

“Our highest priority for 2020 is making 5G more accessible – bringing an affordable yet premium grade, future proof 5G experience for the best possible performance in NSA and SA networks with the Snapdragon 765 Mobile Platform,” said HMD Global chief product officer Juho Sarvikas.

The company adds that this upcoming device will offer Zeiss optics and PureDisplay technology.

Motorola

Another prominent brand hopping aboard the next-gen Snapdragon train is Motorola, with company president Sergio Buniac revealing its plans.

“As the mobile arm, Motorola will continue leading the 5G era with our expanded lineup of 5G solutions in 2020 — driven by the high-performing Snapdragon 765 and 865 Mobile Platforms, re-invigorating our place in the premium flagship space,” Buniac said in a press statement.

The company’s last flagship was the Moto Z3 back in 2018, using 2017’s Snapdragon 835 silicon.

Oppo

Oppo Reno Ace review nestled on mulch

The BBK-owned brand isn’t wasting any time either, and it’s confirmed that it’ll be among several others launching Snapdragon 865 phones early next year.

“In 2020 Q1, Oppo will launch its flagship product using the Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, together bringing a faster and superior 5G experience to users,” Oppo president Alen Wu said in a Qualcomm statement.

Oppo’s flagship series is currently the Reno range (seen above), so we’d expect a Snapdragon 865-powered entry in this family. It wouldn’t be the only Reno device powered by brand-new silicon though, as the company’s Brian Shen confirmed on Twitter that the upcoming Reno 3 5G will have a Snapdragon 765G chipset.

Xiaomi

The Xiaomi Mi 10 will be one of several Snapdragon 865 phones.Qualcomm

Xiaomi CEO Bin Lin appeared at the Qualcomm event to announce that the upcoming Mi 10 flagship will be among the first wave of Snapdragon 865 phones. He also confirmed that the upcoming Redmi K30 will offer new Qualcomm silicon.

Editor's Pick

“We are announcing that starting next week, we’ll be launching Redmi K30 powered by Snapdragon 765, again, (a) 5G-enabled device. Shortly after that will be Mi 10, as I just mentioned, powered by Snapdragon 865.” the CEO noted. The company clarified in a Qualcomm press statement that the Mi 10 will arrive in Q1 2020.

It’s worth noting that the brand has said on Weibo that the Redmi K30 will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G in particular. This will presumably give a graphical boost over the vanilla Snapdragon 765.

Anyone else?

snapdragon tech summit 2019 partnersQualcomm

Qualcomm stated that other prominent partners set to use the new silicon include Realme and Vivo, noting that they’ll use Snadpragon 765 in particular.

Other partners seen in a slide during the Snapdragon Tech Summit (seen above) include HTC, OnePlus, LG, Nubia, Samsung, and ZTE. Furthermore, the likes of Blackshark, Coolpad, IQOO, Meizu, RedMagic, Smartisan, and TCL are all reportedly getting in on the action too.

Google delivered Domino's pizzas with Pixel 4 topping on Cyber Monday - Android Authority

Google Pixel 4 dominos pizza boxPizzawithPixel

Google baked Pixel 4 phones inside Domino’s pizza boxes for Cyber Monday deliveries. The tech giant had also tried the stunt at the Made By Google event back in October. At the time, Google only delivered these steaming hot Pixel 4 pizza pies to influencers and sales reps. Come Cyber Monday, the tech giant decided to give regular folks a taste of the fun.

Some people in Miami, Florida were able to order an unlocked 128GB Pixel 4 phone with their Domino’s pizza (via 9to5Google). To sweeten to deal, Google shaved off $200 from the price of the flagship, selling it for $699.

What was in the Pixel 4 pizza box?

pixel 4 pizza box 9to5g00gle

9to5Google

The smartphone was delivered in a 12-inch limited edition pizza box when ordered from pizzawithpixel.com. The box came with a special housing for the Pixel 4 on the top lid. As you can see in the image on top of this article, features of the Pixel 4, like Motion Sense, Astrophotography, and Google Assistant are listed on the box.

A separate box contained the phone’s 18W charger, USB-C cable, Quick Switch adapter, SIM tool, and a special edition case.

We hope Google expands this Pizza with Pixel experience to other cities and countries as well. It sure is a helluva way to market the phone. Google knows all too well that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach.
