PT Modder Escapes House and Walks the Streets of Silent Hills - IGN - IGN

Remember the modder who discovered that in PT, the vengeful ghost of Lisa was actually always behind you in the game? Well, that modder is back to inject even more nightmare fuel into our horror-loving hearts, as his latest video reveals an explorable version of the Silent Hills street we saw Norman Reedus walk in the demo’s ending.

YouTuber Lance McDonald’s latest video (via Eurogamer) shows his modding handiwork in action, as he manages to escape the confines of PT’s haunted house and walk the streets of Silent Hill for a surprisingly long distance.

McDonald achieved this feat by manipulating the game’s code, he says. Originally, PT achieves the house’s endless loop effect by linking together separate map files, allowing different variations of the same hallway. McDonald simply changed the code in this process and swapped in the code for the Silent Hill street, since it’s all rendered in-game for that final cutscene.

McDonald evidently learned the hard way that Kojima Productions obviously never intended for players to walk around that space. Since there’s no collision physics, the player character simply falls beneath the “earth” and continues falling until, suddenly, Lisa appears and strangles the player to death, just like in the normal game. It appears that the Kojima Productions team accounted even for this scenario.

McDonald remedied this problem by simply changing the code to get the player camera to float a small distance above its usual height, which allowed him to continue on down the Silent Hill street. What he found was a fairly typical assortment of vaguely suburban minutia, including cars, trees, and a number of large apartment buildings. It’s all shrouded in darkness, and each street seems to be lined with different kinds of garbage or worn down construction equipment.

“As is common in Silent Hill, there’s a perpetual feeling of the entire world both being under construction and long since abandoned,” McDonald says in his video. “The street signs, roadblocks, and scaffolding throughout help to create this unwelcoming atmosphere.”

McDonald’s journey down the road ends with an equally spooky walk underneath a bridge before signing off.

“I found it fairly amazing to have a chance to explore a somewhat entirely new physical space in PT, something handcrafted by the team at Kojima Productions while in-house at Konami as an official part of the mainline Silent Hill series. While there’s no way to tell what the future holds, this may be the final canonical rendition of Silent Hill ever to exist, so I hope you feel that I helped in some way today by giving you a chance to explore along with me.”

McDonald was also responsible for discovering a seemingly unused scenario in PT where Lisa’s headless corpse could be found in the bathtub. It’s unclear if PT holds any more mysteries now that it’s been five years since its release, and now that modders like McDonald have mined it for (seemingly) all its worth, but hope (and murderous ghosts) spring eternal.

Verizon rolls out Android 10 for 5G variants of Galaxy Note10+ and S10 - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Samsung was going to release the stable build of Android 10 for the Galaxy S10 and Note10 lineups starting next month, but the company surprised everyone by rolling out the update for S10 trio and the Note10 pair ahead of schedule.

The company recently said that it won't be able to release Android 10 for the 5G versions of Note10 duo this year, but US carrier Verizon has its own take on it and has already started rolling out the latest version of Android for the Note10+ 5G in the US.

The new firmware, bearing version number N976VVRU2BSL7, comes with One UI 2.0 and brings in Live Transcribe, Smart Reply, improved Gestures and Camera UX, and Focus Mode to the smartphone. It also includes the latest Android security patch level dated December 1, 2019.

Verizon has also released Android 10 for the Galaxy S10 5G. The update sports version number G977UVRU3BSL2 and comes with the same set of new and improved features.

Samsung's Galaxy S10 family is massively discounted again in last-minute Amazon Christmas sale - PhoneArena

Yes, you can still order and get some of the year's very best Android smartphones by Christmas. And yes, you can once again score a substantial discount on Samsung's entire Galaxy S10 flagship family. This time around, we're talking actual money shaven off the list prices of the S10, S10+, and S10e in factory unlocked variants backed by a standard 1-year manufacturer's warranty rather than an arguably impressive smartwatch bundled in at no extra charge.
The newest round of one-day-only Amazon deals is even better than what the e-commerce giant offered for 24 hours just a little while back. That's because the heavily marked-down Snapdragon 855 powerhouses are now sold alongside a $50 gift card you can use during a future shopping session on the same website.

The 5.8-inch Galaxy S10e is thus available for a cool 300 bucks less than usual in combination with said voucher in a single 256GB storage variant and your choice of black or blue paint jobs. Meanwhile, the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 and 6.4-inch Galaxy S10+ can be purchased at an even heftier $350 discount when taking the value of the complimentary gift card into consideration.

Up for grabs with either 128 or 512 gigs of local digital hoarding room, the "regular" S10 can be had in several different hues, ranging from black and blue to white and even the extremely eye-catching "Flamingo Pink." Finally, the S10 Plus is available in 128 and 512GB configurations, as well as a state-of-the-art 1TB version that upgrades the 8GB RAM count of the other two models to a whopping 12 gigs of the good stuff.

There are obviously a number of important things, standout features, and key differences to consider when trying to decide which of these three is right from you, including screen size, whether or not you want your AMOLED display to be curved, the type of fingerprint recognition you're most comfortable with, the number of rear and front-facing cameras, and perhaps most notably, battery capacity.

Google Lens now lets you virtually dye your hair - Engadget

Sponsored Links

L’Oréal

Coloring your hair is a fun way to change your look -- but you never quite know how the end result will turn out before you pull the trigger. Until now, that is, as L'Oréal has partnered with Google Lens for a pilot which offers a fast way to try out hair colors virtually.

If you find a Garnier Nutrisse or Olia hair color in a Walmart store and you're intrigued how it would look on you, you just point the Lens app at the box. This will detect the particular shade you're looking at and open up a web page where you can use Garnier's virtual try-on to see that hair color on yourself.

The service is available at 500 Walmart stores across the US from today. The virtual try-on is powered by beauty tech company Modiface, which L'Oréal purchased last year.

This is the first time Google Lens has offered a service in partnership with the beauty industry, as it has previously been used for dining, translation and art discovery. Virtual beauty content is a growing field, however, such as YouTube's AR Beauty feature which lets you try on lipstick while watching videos or Target's AR 'studio' which lets you try on makeup at home.

Over 267M Facebook users' information exposed: Report - Fox Business

The private information of more than 267 million Facebook users was reportedly exposed online for anyone to access.

Approximately 267,140,436 users, most of whom reside in the United States, had their Facebook IDs, phone numbers and names exposed in an unsecured database, according to a report published Thursday by cybersecurity firm Comparitech and security researcher Bob Diachenko.

The report warned users that the information within the database could be used to conduct spam and phishing schemes. The report also noted that users could be exposed to “other threats” but did not specify what those are.

FACEBOOK PLANS TO TACKLE 2020 US CENSUS INTERFERENCE ATTEMPTS

The information was exposed for two weeks before access to the database was removed, according to the report.

Facebook has not immediately responded to FOX Business' request for comment.

It remains unclear how the user IDs and phone numbers were obtained but Diachenko believes it may be linked to an illegal process known as "scraping" or criminals in Vietnam who abused Facebook's developer API, according to the evidence obtained by the firm and Diachenko.

Scraping is when automated bots copy troves of data from various websites usually placed into a database, often for analysis.

It is possible the data was stolen from API before the company restricted access to users' phone numbers back in 2018, according to Diachenko.

Prior to 2018, phone numbers were available to third-party developers, according to the report. However, API may also have a hole in its security system that may allow criminals to access the records even after access was restricted, the report said.

Another possibility is that the information was "scraped" from publicly visible profile pages.

“It’s difficult for Facebook and other social media sites to prevent scraping because they often cannot tell the difference between a legitimate user and a bot,” the report read.

Diachenko warns users to be on the lookout for suspicious text messages. In addition, Facebook users can minimize the risk of having their information "scraped" by adjusting their profile privacy settings.

To do so users must:

  1. Open Facebook and go to "Settings"
  2. Click "Privacy"
  3. Set all relevant fields to "Friends" or "Only me"
  4. Set "Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile" to "No"

419M FACEBOOK USERS’ ACCOUNTS, PHONE NUMBERS FOUND ON ONLINE DATABASE: REPORT

This comes just after records of more than 419 million Facebook accounts -- including phone numbers associated with the accounts -- were found online in September. The records were found across several databases on a server that was not protected by a passwordTechCrunch reported.

FOX Business’ Ann Schmidt contributed to this report.

Bloomberg: Apple researching ways to use satellites to beam data directly to iPhone and its other devices - 9to5Mac

Within 5 years, Apple could send data to your iPhone directly from the Earth’s atmosphere. At least, that appears to be its goal according to a new report from Bloomberg.

The company is said to be hiring software, hardware, and aerospace engineers to find new methods of data transfer for the iPhone and its other fleet of consumer products.

Back in 2017, Bloomberg first reported that Apple was interested in the arena of satellites, having purportedly held talks with Boeing over a low-earth satellite endeavor that would expand internet access for developing nations.

As we enter the next decade, it seems like those early explorations of satellites have now reached a point of seriousness, and Apple has given the go-ahead to put a full team on the job.

The way the state of affairs is described in Bloomberg’s published story today is that Apple is interested in the domain, but doesn’t have a clear path forward yet. The company has supposedly set internal expectations such that meaningful results from the group are about five years away. Bloomberg notes that “work on the project is still early and could be abandoned”, but Tim Cook has seen satellites as a company priority.

Possible outcomes could include reducing the need for carrier relationships if Apple could beam information directly using a fleet of satellites in the sky. It may also have applications for Apple Maps initiatives.
