Microsoft forced to create a free Windows 7 update just days after updates ended - The Verge

Microsoft released its final public security updates for Windows 7 earlier this month, ending support for the operating system after more than 10 years. While the final updates looked pretty routine, Microsoft has now revealed that one is causing wallpaper issues for some Windows 7 users. “After installing KB4534310, your desktop wallpaper might display as black when set to Stretch,” admits Microsoft. It seems to only be affecting stretched wallpapers, and fit, fill, tile, or center options are still working for Windows 7 users.

It’s an embarrassing bug, introduced just as Microsoft was supposed to stop supporting Windows 7. It also left Microsoft with the dilemma of introducing an obvious bug that customers would then have to pay to get fixed.

While Microsoft initially said it was working on a Windows 7 fix that would only be available “for organizations who have purchased Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU),” the software giant changed its mind overnight and now says the fix will be available to everyone running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Bizarrely, this means Microsoft has to extend its Windows 7 support to fix a bug it has introduced.

It’s unusual for Microsoft to issue public patches and updates to operating systems that are marked as out of support, as customers typically have to purchase ESUs. These are either $25 or $50 per machine for businesses still running Windows 7, and have led to the German government paying around $887,000 for its PCs. However, Microsoft has issued public patches for Windows XP in the past, to help prevent ransomware attacks.

Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Buds+ leak together in official-looking shots - Engadget

Evleaks/Samsung, Twitter

At this rate, you may know exactly what to expect at Samsung's February 11th event. Well-known leaker Evan Blass has shared a flurry of apparent official images for the Galaxy S20 family, including one for a promo that offers a free set of Galaxy Buds+ for people who pre-order the S20+ or S20 Ultra -- it's not quite revealing everything in one picture, but it's pretty close. The shots appear to confirm much of what you've seen in live photos and other rumors, including ridiculous camera arrays that include a 100X "space zoom" on the S20 Ultra.

Apart from the cameras (including a 108-megapixel shooter on the Ultra), the Galaxy S20 range is expected to be a more evolutionary upgrade with speedier Snapdragon 865 processors in some countries, up to 16GB of RAM and 120Hz displays. The Galaxy Buds+, meanwhile, would have much-improved battery life and call quality without changing the core formula of the true wireless earpieces. That's important when the S20 family is expected to ditch the headphone jack -- even if there's a headphone adapter in the box, Bluetooth audio will be that much more important.

India is now a larger smartphone market than the US - Engadget

Sponsored Links

China eclipsed the US as the largest smartphone market on Earth years ago, but now Americans can't even claim second place. Counterpoint Research estimates that India overtook the US to become the second-largest market, with 158 million phones shipping to the country in 2019. That's largely due to the surge of Chinese manufacturers offering aggressively-priced devices, analysts said. A whopping 72 percent of phones shipped to India came from brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.

This isn't to say non-Chinese brands fared poorly, but the results were mixed. Apple grew quickly at the end of 2019 thanks to iPhone XR price cuts and the debut of the iPhone 11. Samsung, however, saw flat results at the same period and ultimately declined five percent in 2019.

It's not shocking that India would overtake the US given its population and an emerging market where more people can afford smartphones in the first place. However, this could still have a significant impact on how phone makers sell devices beyond what you've seen so far. They may be more likely to design phones with India in mind, for instance. Don't be surprised if your favorite brand shifts its focus, whether or not there are benefits in other corners of the world.

Save on Eero’s mesh Wi-Fi kit, the Google Pixel 4, Beats Solo Pro, and more - The Verge

The weekend is a good time to catch up on everything, including deals that you might have missed throughout the week. Below, you’ll find a mix of new sales we think are worth pointing out and a few ongoing offers that have already been featured in our coverage.

Eero’s three-pack of mesh Wi-Fi routers (pictured above) was a popular product during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, mostly because it was selling for the low price of $159 ($90 off its retail price). We haven’t seen it go that low since, but it’s selling for $174 at Amazon and $174.99 at Best Buy right now in case you’re still looking for a mesh Wi-Fi solution to blanket your abode with reliable wireless coverage.

Google Nest Mini smart speakers usually cost $49.99 (you can commonly find them for less), but Daily Steals is offering Verge readers a special deal for a limited time on a two-pack of new Nest Mini speakers. After you’ve added them to your cart, enter the code VERGENEST at checkout to get two for $56.99.

Amazon has been running a “buy three for the price of two” deal on Blu-ray movies and video games for the past few days, and it still seems to be running. Newly released movies are eligible, including The Farewell, Joker, Us, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Ad Astra, It Chapter Two, and Gemini Man. Studio Ghibli classics like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind are part of this offer as well.

If you’re after games, the selection isn’t quite as good, though games like Death Stranding, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS4, Xbox One), Dragon Quest Builders 2 (PS4), and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition (PS4, Xbox One) are up for grabs.

Beats Solo Pro on-ear wireless headphones with active noise cancellation are $249.99 at Best Buy through Monday, January 27th. These usually run for $299.99, and according to our review, they’re the best Beats headphones yet. Best Buy is offering them in several color variations.

Moment, the maker of phone cases, mobile lenses that can attach to them, and other products, is hosting a winter clearance sale. The company says you can save up to 60 percent on select products, photography lessons, and more.

The Half-Life franchise is free to play on Steam for the next two months. As Valve nears the release of its anticipated Half-Life: Alyx VR title in March, the company has made it easier than ever for those who haven’t yet played all of the games and expansions to do so. Once you’re logged in to your Steam account, visit this page to start downloading them on the house.

Google’s 2019 flagship phones, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, are each $100 off at Best Buy and include a free $200 gift card with purchase. This deal works only for the 64GB black models, which cost $699.99 and $799.99, respectively, during this sale period. Make sure to click “Activate Later” beneath the price listed on the product page; otherwise, Best Buy assumes you will want to tie it to a carrier plan.

T-Mobile customers can get an awesome Galaxy S10/Galaxy Watch Active 2 bundle deal - PhoneArena

There's no better time to purchase Samsung's excellent Galaxy S10 than two weeks before the official announcement of the Galaxy S20 lineup. No, we kid you not, because not only are Costco members allowed to get the powerful 6.1-inch handset at an extremely reasonable price, but for a limited time, the warehouse club chain also throws in the equally great Galaxy Watch Active 2 for no extra charge.
Obviously, the killer new deal, kicked off on January 24 and scheduled to run until February 2, is not without strings. But as "catches" and special requirements go, the main condition you have to meet to qualify for this promotion is fairly easy to swallow. We're talking about obligatory T-Mobile activation of your hot new phone at your local Costco Wireless Center. That doesn't need to be on a new account and you don't even have to add a new line of service to an existing account with the nation's leading "Un-carrier."

What the fitness-centric smartwatch does have is a very particular (and extensive) set of health-monitoring skills, sleep tracking tools included, as well as a beautiful AMOLED screen in tow, robust battery life, and everything from built-in GPS functionality to NFC support for wrist payments.

The Galaxy S10, meanwhile, packs a (still) blazing fast Snapdragon 855 processor, along with a decent 3,400mAh battery, 8 gigs of memory, 128 gigs of internal storage space, microSD support, a versatile 12 + 12 + 16MP triple rear-facing camera system, a stunning Dynamic AMOLED display with a small hole housing a 10MP selfie shooter, and yes, even a good old fashioned headphone jack.
